I was wheeling this weekend and trying to get up an obstacle I lifted a tire and lost momentum. So I held the brake and the gas at the same time which usually locks something in and gets me through it. Well this time I heard an extremely loud "POP" so I backed off the obstacle. upon inspection I found nothing. Later I tried a pretty easy hillclimb and found myself STUCK!!! The back wheels were spinning but nothing in the front. I'm thinking I broke whatever locks the transfer case into full time vs. part time. any clues?? :?

I was in 4 low in both cases. the front still appears to be getting some power but if I loose traction with one tire thats it. It used to be I had to loose traction on one front and one rear at the same time. Oh, its a 2002 liberty limited if that matters to anyone. stock. no mods yet!

So you have Selec-Trac...were you in FullTime when climbing? That might cause just the rear tires to spin and not the front. If you were in PartTime and one of the fronts were not turning...then something is wrong. Probably best to put it up on 4 jackstands with the wheels off the ground...put in in PartTime (so the center diff is locked) and see if one front and one rear turn. Don't go crazy on the gas!

If at least one of the fronts do not turn...shut down the KJ...turn the front driveshaft manually and see if one front wheel turns. If it doesn't, then you know that the problem is probably in the front diff. If one does turn, then the problem is probably at the back of the front driveshaft or inside the transfercase.

There has been a few report failure of the select-trac (NV2424) t-case just like you mentioned. Something to do with the way to locks the center diff. They where listed back on the old message board.

Send a PM to allyrand or skrracing. They have seen the failures first hand and should be of more help.

Haha. Good luck, I had to call the OWNER of my dealership AT HIS HOUSE to get a replacement for a wheel they gouged the CRAP out of when an impact wrench slipped of a lug nut while the techs were trying to balance my tires. I showed the service department the day I took delivery of the car (16 miles on the odometer) and they were like "Oh yeah, we'll get that taken care of!". The service department ended up trying to blame me for the scratch... I hate that dealership.

Sometimes the Tcase can "pop" out of 4low if the linkage needs to be adjusted. Maybe this is what happened?

I'm in L.A. now so Its early here. lol! I'm finally going out to check out the carnage and hopefully figure out what happened. the pop was just that. An extremely loud POP! that I can only describe as the same lud pop my alxe shaft made when I snapped my 12 bolt shaft in my blazer a few years ago. but the front axle was not acting the like thats what let go. updates very soon. I think you guys need a broken parts page cause carnage is great (when its not yours)

Best way to tell if something is broke in the tcase is to jack the front end up till the wheels are off the ground. In 2wd the front drive shaft should turn no problem.. In parttime you shouldnt be able to turn it since the rear wheels are on the ground.. Be sure to set the parking brake good!

need more info, sounds like a CV.

If the diff blew you should have a louder clunky sound. If the t-case broke, you should hear nasty sounds too. If the cv broke you could still drive but you would hear tings tings, but this would cause all power to the front to be transfer to that broken peice, which is no longer connected to the wheel, so no spinny.

get us more info.

True, hadent thought about the cv.. Im sure it would be easy to notice the front diff. A huge crack and oil everywhere may give it away.

CV would be my guess as well. Heard grinding sounds but only when I turned. Going straight it sounded normal.

Hope it is something minor.

He doesnt have a lift or anything and its not like he was rock crawling.. Would be kinda odd for the CV to just break like that. Unless it was a bad cv from factory?

You'll always hear a CV chrunching its way around the place especially when turning, its a constant clicking clunking noise.

I'm with Jeepjeepster, I think the T'case lever has "poped" out.

Ok, heres the final word for now. I jacked it up and turned the whells. everything appeared to be normal. So I found a mound of dirt to do some tests. the front wheels are getting power. And everything appears normal. HOWEVER...If I lift a front tire and loose traction, I can hit the brakes and then apply the gas. you will then hear a loud "POP" and I will loose power to the front after that. The wheel wont even spin in the air. Not sure whats popping out but it doesn't sound good when it happens. I will try to use my digital camera and take a short little movie of it so you guys can see exactly what it does. Thanks for all the advice and help!!

The front drive shaft is disengaging somehow inside the Tcase.

Go to Dealer, do not pass Go, collect $200 :D
