| Post subject: | gearing question |
i was looking at a friend of mines old suzuki samurai that's lift with 33's and a i asked him what gears he had in it and to my surprise he said that the frt and rear diffs are both stock w/ lockers and his t-case has 6.15 gears or something like that. the gears changed his four wheel low and somehow changed the ratio in 2 wheel high. just wondering if this was possible for us to do this considering that there is a lack of gearing options for our p.o.s d30a. |

I don't know what he did, but I can tell you that the stock gear is sorry for a 60 hp motor. I had an 88, it's stock gears were only 3:13's. They worked on sfock tires, but I would feel sorry for the clutch on anything bigger, 33's would be hard to even think about, makes me gringe ha ha. |

You can get a complete transfercase gearset for the samurai the will correct for 33" tires It changes Hi and low range. http://www.rocky-road.com/zukdrive.html Not real cheap but works , plus you get to keep the stronger 3:13 Ring and Pinion gears instead of swapping out for the 4:16 or whatever they are. I suppose someone could make a a gearset for the KJ, they would probably not be cheap, but it would be less of a hassle than changing both front and rear Ring and Pinion gears. I bet the folks that make the Klune V could do it. |

I'm sorry, I typed an error, my stock sammy gears were 3:73's, not 3:13's are whatever it was that I typed. I think they all came from the factory with 3:73's as far as I know. |

Samy's and older Rover's have gear sets available that lower the high range as well as the low range. Not only RR has the samy ones, there are 3-4 other vendors/mfg's for them. Not hard to do for these cases as the are gear to gear cases with off set rear ouput. (Gears are used to produce power output for both high and low ranges) If you are making a new gear set, it is not hard to change the tooth count on the high side and the low side. Our 231/242 tcases have gearsets available to drop the low range, but the high stays 1:1. Reduction in these cases are through a planatary gear, and high range is simply straight through drive....no gears are used to produce the high range ratio.... If you really want gearing, I would look at a 4 speed atlas....all sorts of options, not much loss in rear dline length, and you get rid of the slip yoke....But you have to pay the price....Or there is the option of the KluneV or the DIY aux 231 planetary ruduction boxes.... |
