Post subject:  Skid plate help

Finally sold some stuff on ebay today so i've got some money to play around with (about 100).

I've been looking around jparts.com at skid plates as i know that should be my next investment. For the off-roading i'll be doing, OEM skids will do just fine.

I've found the Engine skid just fine, my only question is about the tranny skid. The only one on Jparts.com that i can find for the tranny is for a 2005-2007. I've got an 03' KJ Freedom edition and was looking to get engine and tranny skids.

Will the 05 tranny skid fit my 03'? Or can anyone point me in the direction of where i can locate a tranny skid for my 03 without breaking my bank too much.

The transmission skid plate from jparts.com can be made to fit an 03 KJ.

they dont make it for the 03....the 05 tranny skid fits but, need tweaking.

you have to drill a hole and either pound flat a section to clear the exhuast or use spacers( I used spacers) and it fit like a glove.

I asked this not long ago and got pics and responses, search skidplates, you get alot of info

priell3 posted just before me! (one of his links is My post from not long ago

I'm in the same situation as you, having limited easy installation options for my 2003 Liberty. You CAN buy the Mopar ones from Jparts.com, but getting them to fit is difficult. Several L.O.S.T. members here have done it, by driling new holes into the frame, grinding off parts of the skids, etc. We shouldn't have to go through this much trouble with a factory accessory.

Seems like the fit of ANY Mopar skid is hit or miss. Prime example: I installed my engine skid last night only to find that one of the attachment points on the skid doesn't have a corresponding bolt hole on my frame. See the picture. This skid is only attached by three of the four bolts, which leaves about a quarter-inch gap on the driver's side rear end of the engine skid. This is unacceptable because the plate could easily get snagged while backing up and ripped off or damaged.

I've heard similar stories from other owners. Next week I plan to return to the dealership where I purchased the skid and insist they make it fit at no charge. I don't know if my KJ has a factory defect or the Mopar skid is wrong, but it's not my problem. They need to make sure what they sell works (and they sold me both the KJ and the skid).

FWIW, when I asked my dealership for a labor quote for installing all four Mopar skids, I was told "2-3 hours if the frame needs to be drilled to make them fit."

Strange, The hole in that angled portion of crossmember is missing? Did the other side have the hole w/ the threaded insert in it? I would mark it, drill it and put a bolt through the crossmember.

I got the '05 skids for our '04. The front skid & t-case skid fit just fine, but had to drill the trany x-member to mount trany skid.

The hole in the crossmember is there, but the that corner of the skid plate ends just before making contact, as if that corner of the plate was trimmed out to sit flush against the crossmember. I know that's not the case because the finish on the plate is perfect. There's something fishy goin on. Given the way the front part of it attaches to the frame, it can only be mounted one way, so I know I'm not looking for the wrong holes.

As expected, because you have an '05. Please re-read the original post. We're talking about 2003 models using 2005-2007 parts.
