Post subject:  Squaking in rear passenger side

I have brought my KJ to a dealer (in Germany, its an american KJ) to get the shocks tested to see if I had to replace the shocks or something. They said that they are perfect almost new condition. Granted I think I have brought her off road once and it wasn't very hard terrian either. There are two roads leading to my house that are pretty rought though. Anywoo ... There is a squeaking in the rear passenger side. It could be internal right? IF so is there any ideas of what it could be?? From the driver side front seat is sounds like it could be coming from under neath the plastic in the rear. Anyone have this issue? Its really annoying to have a brand new KJ (2004) with less then 21000 on it and having a noise in that back that sounds like a 1960 grocery cart!! Please Help!!

I would assume the dealer would check all the mounting bolts for the shocks but who knows. Some have had problems with aftermarket shocks not fitting properly and needing to be retightened. I had to retork my upper shock mount. It sound like a mouse chewing on something in the back. This got progressively worse until I finally got back there and fixed it up. (I knew it wasn't really a mouse 'cause all the peanutbutter was just fine.)

Try checking the rear swing gate. Over time the bolts can loosen and cause the squeaking sound when you go over bumps. Have the shop re-align the door and the strike plates and re-tighten all of the bolts. I had mine done at 80000 kms with no charge.

I had a squeak in my passenger seat. It squeaked when ever I went fishing, camping, or wheeling on the weekends. I just couldn't get it to stop. Then one day the squeaking was so unbearable, I had to open the door and let her out. No problems since......

I have the same mysterious squeak, plus a few new ones (& rattles) since going off-road. I've yet to find a solution, please post if you do.

Check your Transfer case and front/rear differential fluid levels.
My 2003 Limited made these annoying squeaks at low speeds, in reverse, and esp off-road. I just had the Transfer case and front/rear differential fluids changed and the squeeks are gone....

You can fix the rear strike plate yourself; just loosen the bolts and make them just tight that they won't move wtih fingers. then close the door. Gently open the door and tighten everything up. Next ,grease the entire thing up. It's dirty ,but quiet.

Rinse and repeat every 5k miles or so.

A long time ago there was a TSB about a squeak in the rear on the '02/'03s. It was the e-brake cables rubbing on the holders on the rear axle by the center section. All they did on mine was ziptie some rubber tubing over the e-brake cable where it goes through the holder/bracket.

After weeks of listening to squeeking I finally figure it out just don't know how to fix it. When its dry out the squeeking is unbearable but when its raining it completely stopped. So now i know that it is the sway bar. Just don't know how to fix it. Do I need to get a new swaybar installed (MOPAR) or can a garage just fix it?

You should feed that mouse once in awhile.

Burchie, what's your phone number? I want to tell your wife about your post.....Muhahaha!

Are you 100% sure it is the sway bar?

She would say the same thing about me. The only difference is, she is driving and we are going to the mall.

I was squeaking like a little baby.

I took my rear swaybar off months ago, and after more wheeling, the sqeaks and knocks have gotten worse. I think it may be a combination of the rear door and the right rear plastic paneling. My aftermarket shock bolts loosened once after the lift, but not since then in the past 10-12 months.

Put someone with good ears (and low squeaks) in the cargo area while you drive over bumps, that way you stand a chance of pinpointing the source(s).

Take your sway bar off and see if it does it ...? 4 bolts...not hard at all to do.

Your Jeep will handle differently...be prepaired for it...although many of us dont' run a rear sway bar at all.

Good Luck 8)
