| Post subject: | UPDATED-Rustys coil lift ==== PROBLEM FOUND!!! |
Hi I've just finished installed my rustys coil lift and everything went smooth and the looks is freekin good just with 245-75-16 winter tires. BUT the problem is when I testdrive it, from 30km/h a vibration(like a worn bearing) is going up and louder as my speed goes up. So can anyone give me hints about this? It's diving me crazy and I don't want to broke anything on worn a part. I don't want to take a chance of going on the highway...can it be the cv joints that are too steep or the cv axleshaft that is out of tranny ??? the jeep is a 2004 renegade with 55000kilometers ans I put some winter tires with nails on it in 245-75-16--could it be the tires(I'm sure not cause I have used them all winter last year on my rubicon and they weren't as loud as this sound. thanks a lot to you and I promess I'll post pict of the results later.. bye |

I am confused is it noise or a vibration? how fast is 30km/h in mph? most vibes after lift are from bad drive line angles but I dont think that the rustys lift is high enough for that check and recheck all your bolts you may also need to get it aligned |

its a little vibration but very soft with a big sound like a worn bearing, and all bolts have been rechek with a torque wrench, 30km/h is around 15-20mph and as I speed up the sound goes up and the alignement is'nt done yet, but I'm sure that it will not solve this problem... |

Is it a grinding like metal on metal or a wa-wa sound? I am thinking that it may be the alignement along with the tires needing balanced Unlike the TJ when you lift a KJ you pull in the the tires on the front ,toe in? That will make realy weird noise I would swich out to the stock tires and when you have the front tires off measure on the front most part of the front rotors and then the rear most part from rotor to rotor and see what you got? I know that this works on a TJ |

I'm sure tires are well balanced I was there when my friend balanced them, the rims are liberty sport rallywheel and they are straight, so maybe an alignement but too much sound for a alignement problem. does the cv axle can pop out easyly and maybe I did not put it fully will switch the tires tomorrow but sure the problem is not there thanks |

I mean is did you keep the out side the out side on all 4 tires? I had a problem with a set of MT's that when I swiched them from 1 truck to another I could never get it quite rite. I will tell you from my experiances that 95% of the time when you do a lift it is the small things that cause the anoying problems that is why I say tires and alignement first then move on to major junk second |

Check your rear driveshaft/ujoints really close , I had a bad vibration / noise not long after I did my lift, drove around trying to see what it was, pulled back in my garage and the rear u joint was so hot I could not even touch it. New joints took care of the problem. |

Rusty's lift really doesn't put anything at any extremes, especially without the additional 1" spacers that most people add. So unless something was already bad, I don't think the lift cause any problems. I've put on 3 Rusty's lifts and a handful of other and never had a problem. I'd check the tires first. I never had studded tires, but I'm sure they can make a lot of noise. I know my MT/Rs are quite noise and give some vibration. Studded tires could be worst. Also you are going to need an alignment after a lift, so might as well get that taken care of while you are at it. However, I doubt its the alignment. I've driven my KJ and some others that have been lift 3.5" and where quite toed in and never got any additional noise or vibration with stock or MT/Rs. |

thanks for the infos eddo what is this 1'' spacer that people add at the same time ?? cause I put 2 conduit lock nut under the strut each sides and 1 spring isolator each side rear .. maybe your right I go out now to put old tires, will see if its that... could it be front drive shaft noise?? but the front drive shaft did'nt move any lower.... I'll keep you posted |

I'll keep you posted That is what I was saying the tires along with alignement and it will do this kind of stuff I would say it is not a driveline vibe unless something is bad and the lift agrivated it think of it like this you can put 2" of lift on a TJ with no other mods and not get a drive line vibe the KJ has a drive shaft that is much longer so it will be on less of an angle at 2 and even 3" you should be fine if it is a drive line vibe then that is an easy fix rusty's adjustable LCA's and be done with it |

ok! got more info...couple test done. first I put the stock 235-70-16 tires on it and do a testdrive, result: no more sound/vibration god it was good! but a slight vibe in the rear drive shaft under hard acceleration and I can live with that. So I think ; Good! its only the tires but do some other tests , I put the truck on 4 jacking stands and drove it to 60mph and as tire where turning I inspected and no sound but consider that there is no load on the drivetrain. Then an other test, I go to a dirt road and drive it up to 60mph thinking that bad tires or nailed winter tires sound weird on pavement will no sound anymore on dirt but the sound was exactly the same . another thing, there is a lot of slack on the front drive shaft: is it normal ??? cause the rear has just a little like normal. from these test here are my tought: 1-it could be the wheel bearing that with a much more load like taller and wider tires do some noise 2-could be the bearing where the front driveshaft enter the front diff(where you put that diff collar) 3-could be at the front output of the front driveshaft on the transfertcase of the transfertcase itself add your thought... and is the front driveshaft a real pain to get out so I could do test without it and see if it solve the problem. thanks a lot, I'll get it! Rick Sounds like the tires to me. I doubt its your bearings. The spacers are basically 3 conduit nuts and 2 extra upper spring isolators in the rear. |

Rick No part of your front drive shaft has changed nothing at all not the load not any thing if it does it in 2wd then the front drive shaft IS NOT THE PROBLEM it did not move and is only being spun by the front tires rolling If the sound whent away when you put the stock tires on then you answered your own question If I am reading you post correctly you say that you put the rig on jack stands and let it free spin to 60 mph? if so that was about the dumbest thing I have evrer hear do you know what would have happened had just 1 jackstand fell? and that will tell you nothing Now back on task if you get noise and vibes with 1 set of tires but not another what does that tell you? Answer BAD TIRE/TIRES could be out of balance or a bad ware pattern 1 could have a busted belt ,yes it can happen, even though they are ballanced very well when you drive on them they still ride bad |

I don't know Jason, he could have gotten under it to work, while running it, propped up on logs... Well, at least you didn't get hurt, but I wouldn't recommended that approach in the future. |

ok... so about the spin on jackstand, don't be affraid dealers do that to check driveline or diff troubles and it's doable safely, and the truck was secured well , sooooo please don't argue on this. this pm I continued my quest to the noise and found that frt tires have a little much camber so tomorrow we will find if the aligment will solve the trouble,I will try another set of 245 street tires to see what hapens....you were probly right, seems to be the tires.....will see. again thanks for your post and here are some pict of it...nothing new but ... you know... here stock
then lifted with stock tires
then with tires on

| Post subject: | OK PROBLEM FOUND |
hi I finally found what was the problem, I met with our mechanic at work and he told me there is 2 things that cause this, 1st:the tires are winter tires with nails BUT they are not with harmonics blocs he told me, that causing an air draf and noise. 2nd:when putting bigger tires, especialy a tire with bigger blocs (like my winter tire or a mud) the tire come really close to the fender liner , causing air to be squezed between tire and liner and causing air noise like a bad tire.... solutions sor far: I've not tested anything but will try... -remove liner to see if it changes anything Can someone with this kind of lift and 245-75-16 tires who have not modified the front skirt liners can tell me honestly if he saw a difference in tires noise when he passes from stock tires to a 245-75-16 and please tell me wich brand of tires... thanks a lot to all you guys!! I'm very happy to find out that this is not related to my suspension system, but disapointed that nobody on this forum(to my knokledge) has experienced that or speak of this here... thanks again, Rick |

I just put some 245/75s on my KJ last Friday; Pathfinder A/Ts from Discount Tire. Compared to the worn Geolanders that I had on there they are quieter, not as quite as the stock tires but definitely not as bad as an M/T or MT-R. If I have a chance I'll make a recording and post it so you have an idea of what I'm talking about. |
