Does anyone have any suggestions for tow hook options for the front and possibly the rear of an 04 KJ? Will I need brakets to bolt to the unibody? I would really appreciate any guidance in this area. Thanks.

You shouldn't need anything special...If you need a Rear Tow Hook, I have one with less than 500 miles on it. Looks brand new. I added a Hitch.

Will be leaving in the morning for two weeks. Let me know your interested and we can work on something after Labor Day weekend.

I'm definitely interested. If you want, you can email me when you get a chance at jaredmdunn@hotmail.com. I'm not in a huge hurry, so I can wait until after labor day.

Nope, nothing special. Snap the bolts in there, tighten em up, voila...you got tow hooks. :)

Are you talking about generic tow hooks that can be found at any 4wd store or KJ specific tow hooks? Either way, thanks for the info.

Speaking of tow hooks. Does anyone know where to get a good deal on shackles? I have a spare 2" receiver that I want to take the hitch ball off, and use a shackle for the rear recovery point.

I think 3/4" would be the right size? The ball has a 1" shaft so 3/4" should be ok? Maybe 7/8"? Any other ideas?

I took my stock KJ tow hook off and it is very simple to install.

For the Shackle....check All J or 4-Wheel Parts online.

4 Wheel Parts has the Warn 2" receiver shackle for $36.99. Pretty pricey, but it's difficult to find the Warn for less than that.

JParts has front tow hooks for $84.15. My understanding is that your can install these tow hooks without removing the front bumper cover. When I got mine, I got them from someone who got them on their KJ when they bought it, and the hardware was different (no M-bolts), so installing them was a bear.

For the shackles you can go to a farm store or a store near you that deals with lifting. (Crane rental store). I got my shackles at a Farm store near me and they are rated for over 4.5 tons. They are ¾” shackles and can more than handle the load of the jeep. For my jeep my weakest link is my tow strap, this is in hope that if anything fails there won’t be large pieces of metal flying around.

You can buy a bridle, or 96 Chevy Z71 hooks will work GREAT if you add a hole. Z71 hooks are sideways instead of up and down and fill up the space well. The other stuff posted here too.

Limited only by imagination

Just so you know, my sport did not have the top reciever holder in it, I had to take the bumper off to get it in. Some people say they were able to get it up in there, but I tried for hours with no sucess. But no fear, the bumper comes off easy.... and if you break any of the plastic things you can get them at home depot.

2- 10,000lb tow hooks from JCWhitney for less than $15.00.
15 minutes of labor and they were solidly mounted on the front bumper bar.

KJKev, could you explain a little more?
Did you use these hooks in the stock locations?

If you look at the bumper bar thru the 2 rectangular holes on the bumper cover, you will see 2 holes.
The JCWhitney tow hooks lined up perfectly with these 2 holes.
Took me no time at all to install and the look great.

I know, worthless without pix, but just use your imagination.

What year is your KJ? Because on my '02 Limited, the bolt holes would match up however the hook would not with the bumper cover holes. Yeah the exact same JCW hooks. I ended up selling them at a friends garage sale.

I checked them out, why so cheap when the others are $89-$99 a set?

The 15.99 hooks are the standard "universal" 2 bolt design. Not the special 3 m-bolt design plate and hook think the Liberty uses.
This is the first I've heard of someone being able to use the standard hook. I'm sure hoping this proves valid for at least the '03 as I'd much rather spend $16 and have some hooks than spend nothing and have...nothing.

Get a front receiver instead. You'll appreciate it more.

I think I know which ones he is talking about...the outer bolt holes that the factory tow hook mounts bolt to? http://www.thefergusons.us/kj/mounta.jpg

On the left (outer) of the black plate (mount) are 2 bolts and on the right is 1. The center of the mount has 2each 1/12" spaced holes.

I believe the mount to bumper hole spacing is also 1 1/2" center to center, which is the same as the mounts hook holes...1 1/2" and is the same spacing as standard tow hooks.

I (not assuming yours) can fit tow hooks on the "mounts" with the hook opening pointed down and maybe trim a little plastic. I could fit them on the outer mount holes (bumper) but would have to cut through the plastic.

Thats why I went with chevy hooks...sideways.
