Post subject:  Swaybar vs No Swaybar

Just in case anyone is curious here are a couple pictures that show the benefit of disconnecting or removing the swaybar when 4-wheeling.

Swaybard still connected, notice the front tire a good 1 to 1.5 feet off the ground.

Now with the sway bar disconnected and taking the same line, notice the front tire is still on the ground.

Nice comparison! I just wish I wasnt too lazy to get under there to do that or too cheap to get discos. Seeing this might help my lazy ways

I actually have my own disco system. Just need to unhook two bolts, and only takes about 2-3 minutes. Its really not much more difficult than the JKS disco and since it still uses all factory parts it drives the same on the road.

A center cut swaybar w/ pin that some of the lost west people have would be the best, but that is a loooong story.

From real life trail experience, I'm still torn. It's not always a benefit. Dont just look at the droop, look at the lost clearance on the other side. When connected, both springs help hold up the front end and you get less stuffage. It lifts the whole rig. When you discod, the front end stuffs more and the body sits level, losing valuable clearance-especially on boulder ridden trails. It's an inherent drawback of IFS vs SFA.

I still disco most of the time though.

Hi Eddo,
Can you post pictures of the disco system you have?

Thanks,

I was thinking the same thing. Look how close his front bumper is to the ground while the other rigs that have the sway bar connected are further off the ground. I do not see how a SFA would be any different though. The front bumper would still be close to the ground with the sway bar disco'd.

What's not fair in the pictures is that we are on slightly different lines, and his front drivers wheel is in a little ravine whereas my tire is out of it already (plus the effect of the 32's  ) so it isn't as clear cut as that (although I do agree, just not to the extent). I had thought JasonK was going to plow some dirt too, but neither Eddo or JasonK did thankfully.

I was sold on the idea that removing the front swaybar for offroading was good the 1st time I tested it. The difference is night and day.
But whats better is removing the rear as well ;) Its sooo soft off road and the car just walks over everything.

What would disconecting the sway bars do for the ESP system?

I just noticed that the Unlimited Rubicon comes with a quick disconect system for offroad.

Jeephead, check this thread .

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... p?t=11421&

I got bored today and took off my rear sway bar. A buddy and I jacked up one side of the rear axle with his 24" jack.

When it topped out, the driver side tire measures 14" from bottom to ground. The pass tire was still firmly planted on the ground, and the driver tire was nowhere near as stuffed as I've seen it on the trails. I think we could have raised it another 6-8" before the tire got REALLY stuffed! These pictures are with the front swaybar diconnected and the rear swaybar removed. I didn't even think to snap pics of the first time we did it with both bars connected because I didn't think removing the rear would make such a huge dfference. With the rear conencted, the pass tire came off the ground when the driver tire measured 13".

After driving around the rest of the day with the rear off and not feeling any difference, I'm never putting it back on.

Just curios, I understand what happens when the swaybar is off but, is the travel range put way out of the factory specs? Could the other compenents be damaged?
