Post subject:  skid plate bolts rusted and broke - grr!
I was taking off the engine/tranny skid from my 05 CRD to clean the mud and all the bolts were a little rusty. The two bolts between the engine and tranny skid broke. I broke the head off one of them. The other I broke the nut that was welded to the inside of the crossbar so the bolt just spins but doesn't unscrew. Now the skid plates are permanantly fixed to the car.

Not good for 20000 mi

I busted the nutzerts (all except the front 2 for the engine skid) long ago. I just drilled a hole all the way through the crossmember and used a 3 1/2" bolt with nut to secure them. Did the same for the front of the tranny skid/back of engine skid, except I used a shorter bolt and did not go all the way through on the driverside, You can get to the inside of that rail, and the exhaust would have been in the way to go all the way through.

I think I will do the same to mount mine when I get them, I might even spring for some stainless hardware.

Good luck with the broken bolt removal. You might have to drill them out, weld the spinning one back or clean it up and put some JB weld on there to keep it from spinning while you are drilling.

Thnaks guys,

I was thinking I would take this one up with the dealer but there is still a lot of mud up under the plates. Do you think I'm likely to get a ration of crap for this?

I dont know that the dealer will help out on this one ,you may be on your own
I did like others and through bolted looking back I should have used carraige bolts the 1/2" hex nuts are beat up good and I never hit rocks ,south LA, lots of dirt and roots

Spray it off REALLY good and give it a try. Make something up, like you were checking all the bolts like it says to in the owners manual and you found those were loose. If they say something about offroad, play stupid. Say you thought those plates were to keep the jeep from flipping. Thats why they are so heavy. :lol:

A guy in High school thought thats what they were for. :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Heck, if they are some good guys they might fix it for you. Have they ever removed them before? If so you could claim they overtorqued them. Heck, maybe they did!

I'd visit the dealer first - don't even mention it to them that you broke the bolts off. Just take it in and say you noticed that one was missing it's hex head and another is rattling while you drive. The dealer should buy into the rattling issue - a comon buzz word known as BSR [Buzz Squeak & Rattle] will probably show up on your waranty ticket.

If they don't fix it - you can always just go ahead and drill them out... But heck your CRD is still under warranty so there can't be any harm in trying.
