Post subject:  scary sounds...

so today i was climbing a sand dune and i started loosing momentum, so i stopped, put it in nuetral, and locked in 4 low. I noticed a kind of clicking sound that i think was coming from the front right tire, it only did it while spinning, and stopped when i took it out of 4-low, back to 2wd. and ideas? one thing that i know it isnt rubbing on the wheel well plastic ( wheels were only turned slighty)

any hints would be greatly appreciated, and i will post pictures of nessesary

the clicking sound seemed to be happening at one point on every revolution of the tire.

Your transfer case might not have been engaged all the way. Did it still make the noise after you took it out of 4 wheel?

no it didnt, but it didnt sound like it was coming from the T-case. it sounded like it was around the front tires.

Did it do it all the time(Jeep just moving around), or only when the tire was spinning(no traction)?

Was it any worse if you turned the steering wheel to lock then moved?

Could be a bad CV joint. :?

im pretty sure it was doing it all the time, just as long as the tire was moving. Ill check tomorrow to see if it is any worse when I turn. Ill get alot more details about it, ill try different t-case selections on the same surface to see if it does it.

It would have definately been your transfer case if it happened as you described. When climbing or on an incline there is a lot of stress on components from bein under constant load of the vehicle naturally wanting to go down. It happened to me before I was knowledgeable on the subject, exact same thing under the exact same circumstances.

If it can be avoided, never shift the transfer case at all on any slope, up or down. It's best to "feather" the throttle once you shift the transfer case into or out of 4hi or 4lo. That way the gears all have time to "mesh" or sync up with the load being let off and applied again.

Best bet; shift on flat ground, have enough time to "feather" the throttle 3 or 4 times and the vehicle move at least three tire rotations.

Hope that helps!
