Speaking of Skid Plates (MOPAR)

I've got to get a MOPAR tranny skid up under the Jeep. Anyone do this install?

It appears simple enough, but any hints would be nice. I'll be crawling under there tomorrow.

Did you get the kit with the bolts and nut zerts? And what plates did you get?

I'm only putting on the Transmission skid right now. The renegade came with the rest.
Here are some pics (and what I assume to do with the parts).

1) Here are the parts on the parts list

2) The nut zerts (??) need to slipped into the frame

3) Then they are torqued (I assume to flare the lip and hold into place?)

4) Once the zerts are in place, remove the bolts from front skid and set the Trans skid into place.

5) Torque all 4 bolts to 25 - 30 ft-lbs.

Please correct me if I have any of this wrong. I'll post pics after the install.

Just follow the directions, and it is easier to do that you think. You will need to loosen the 2 engine skid bolts as they hold both skids in place. Take it under the jeep and position it where it goes and you will see.

I thought the renegade model came with full skids. I guess not?

I did too. Eddo pointed it out to me one time. I went back to look at the factory sticker. It showed all but the transmission skid in the group.

They didn't make this skid till '05. I believe you'll have to reposition the rear hole on the driver's side on the earlier rigs.

I put this skid on my 04.

It will sandwich between the engine skid and the engine cross member. One bolt will line up there and there is no use in drilling for the other one.

On the back of the skid, one hole lined up but didnt go all the way through the cross member. You could use a nut zert there, but I just drilled two holes all the way through and used some 1/4in 2.5in(I think) grade 8 bolts and put a lock nut on top of the cross member with a washer. Works out just fine. :wink:

Hey when you live in Southern Ohio/ West Virginia or Kentucky you have to have at least 4 or 5 jeeps sitting around!! :lol:

They dont all have to run but they must be sitting around the yard out front!! :lol:

Just kidding Jeepjeepster, but of course I grew up in Southern Ohio ( with old trucks/ 4 wheel drives/ tractors in and around "the front yard"

JeepJeepster, Too bad the wheels don't all interchange for the KJ and the other Jeeps you have...

I am curious what rubber you run on the other Jeeps and how you find them...

How do you change the engine oil with those skids on? It looks like it will just all dump into the skid plate.

There is a cut-away hole up front (by the oil drain plug)

The trick is getting your hand out of the hole, and out of the way of the oil stream before you make a big mess. :cry:

The 06 Grand has the stock 235/65/17 Goodyear Hp's since it only has 1200 miles on it. I run either 235/65/17 GoodYear Hp's(soon to be replaced) or 245/70/16 Yokohama Geolander A/T-S(two sets of rims). My brother has 225/75/16 Yokohama Geolander A/T +2 on his cherokee. And the Green 94 grand cheroke in that pic has 235/75/16 GoodYear RT/S. We buy most of our ties on Tirerack.com.

I never get out of the way quick enough.

Oil usually ends up all over the top of the skid and all over my arm. :lol:

I haven't changed the oil on any liberty with the tranny skid, but can you get your fingers in on the side of the skid (not using the hole?) and wiggle the drain plug loose? This is a trick I used when I worked at the fast lube place as a teenager. Saved my skin from getting burned almost every time.
