Post subject:  Strut tower brace?

I have been doing some thinking, and Seeing some stuff from the rice rockets as far as how they have a cross brace for the front strut towers for added suport for them being a unibody construction. The last few days I have been wondering if such a product is possible for the liberty? I mean they are unibody construction and it could probably help stiffen it up.

What are others thoughts?

The KJ has a different front suspension design than the cars you are comparing it to. Generally most cars that have a strut tower brace utilize a Macpherson suspension, consisting of a lower control arm and a strut. The strut is a load bearing member in this design and has a larger diameter shaft compared to a shock. The KJ front suspension consists of upper and lower control arms, which direct the loads into the chassis, the shock is just damping the vertical movement and the maximum force it is subjected to is the compressed spring rate (distance to compress the spring* spring rate = force) ~ for our purposes 4in*400lbs/in=1600lbs.

Now could the KJ benefit from a brace? Maybe but it is not as critical as the cars you are comparing it to. The hard part is to determine if the cost of making one, relocating engine plumbing is worth increasing unibody torsonal stiffness. I am directing my energy into my own adjustable heigth lift, but that is another topic.

I think OzLtd posted some pictures of a Libby with the setup your talking about.Look in 4X4 Discussion Biggest KJ page 1 about 3/4 of the way down on page.Several pics of front and rear tower braces.

are you talking about the one that had a complete solid axle conversion in the front and had tubeframe spring mounts in the frotn and back that stuck through the floor in the rear and into the engine comaprtment in the front?? lol

but seriously, a strut tower bar would probably still help stiffen it up a little bit, even if it does have upper and lowers in the front. the wieght is still being held up by the springs which are pushing up on the shock towers.

i have an 89 honda prelude with upper and lower control arms in the front and rear, and i noticed a big difference when i take corners really hard now. it stiffened it up a lot, and i added them to the front and back. they are made by cusco. i also have tokico struts and eibach pro-kit springs. so all that together made it a corner-grabbing machine ;) but the jeeps uni-body is supposed to be REALLY stiff, at least comapred to the cherokee it reaplced, so i read. so maybe you wouldnt notice as big of a difference. who knows :)
