| Post subject: | Locker affects on Selec-Trac |
I am not real smart on this stuff so hopefully someone can help me out. I have a 2005 CRD with selec trac and Trac lok (I know trac lok is a LSD and Selec-trac is the 4 full time option). My question is if I were to add a locker to the front or the rear how does that affect the selec trac when it is engaged? and does it matter if I choose a selectable Locker? Thanks |

With a locker in the front - when it's locked - you can't turn very well. Both wheels are going to go the same number of revolutions even if they're pointed sideways. Therefore - front should be either limited slip or selectable i.e. ARB type. I put a limited slip a Truetrac in mine - (works great on icy roads - haven't been offroad yet) but you can feel the Truetrac working a lot when you're in 4 wheel drive and to some degree even when you're in 2 wheel drive. I don't know about the Trac-lok in the rear - from what I've heard they're good - but not as effective as the aftermarket (Auburn, Truetrack) and they'll wear out the clutches - the Power-Trax Locker seems to be either loved or hated on-road- depending on who you talk to but universally loved off-road and the selectable ARB would be great and of course - the most expensive. Edit: Oops.. I was thinking Power-Trax locker - but I typed Select-trac. Wrong and confusing - Power-Trax is a locker for the rear - Select is the transfer case - that allows full time 4wheel drive. corrected, sorry about that. |

I am not sure if we are talking the same Selec-trac (if we are then I am really confused). I am refering to the 242 part/full-time transfer case and I am wondering how adding a new front locker or changing the trac loc locker out will affect the way Selec-trac works? |

Lockers do not affect how your transfer case works (mechanically speaking). Depending on the locker you choose they can affect steering and handling characteristics, however. Not necessarily in a bad way...just different. With selectable lockers (like ARB) this is not a concern as you can lock them up when need and leave your diffs open the rest of the time. |

So I think I understand now. Selec-trac locks or unlocks the center differential which controls the power to the front or rear. A rear or front locker will control how the wheels spin when the power gets to the front or rear? |

A locker/LSD will only affect wheel spin in the axle it is housed in. I have the Select-Trac, too, and have wondered how a locker/LSD would act in full-time, especially in the front. We definitely benefit from full-time in road/off-road situations where there IS quite a bit of traction and/or a lot of sharp turning, and getting a fully selectable locker like an ARB I think would defeat the full-time option, since you wouldn't really be able to turn the front if it was locked with the ARB in situations with a good amount of traction. The point of the full-time option is to be able to manueaver without the resistance that might be found in part-time in that same given situation. I think that's why going for an LSD like Detroit Tru-Trac in the front is probably a good idea, since it's not an "on or off" thing. I think a few KJers would agree with me that one of the more optimal set-ups would be the Detroict Tru-Trac up front and an ARB in the rear. I'm definitely getting the Tru-Trac, but I might try getting something cheaper for the rear axle. |
