I am going to make my own hitch mounted shackle because I can do it a lot cheaper than the $40-50 they want for the Warn model. I'v got a 2ft length of solid 2X2 stock that I can cut to size. And I picked up a shackle from TSC for $14.?? They had the Warn brand clevis that has a 4-3/4 ton rating for like $25...the one I got is rated for 6.5 tons. The real kicker is that they look like they were made by the same company. The warn receiver end of the setup measured 6" overall with the holes 4" on center. (roughly) What I want to know is what, if anything, would you change about the Warn setup. Shorter? if possible Longer? Maybe make the clevis pivot horizontally instead of vertically? Use a pin type D ring clevis instead of the screw in type? BTW HERE is the cheapest one I found on the net...still a bit more than what I will have in mine. |

I would have the clevis pivot vertically (that is, the pin is horizontal and the clevis will droop below the mount when fitted). On our run Saturday one member had his mounted so the pin was vertical and he had to flip it so that the flat thumb-screw end was up on top so it wouldn't possibly get bent by a rock. Having the pin horizontal would avoid that problem. |

Rusty's has them for $22 and I have one on my kj and love it a real heavy duty piece.I am working with them as we speak on getting front mounted shackle point's so we can get rid of those crappy hook's.I will be getting the first one's so I can give them feedback on what maybe I would change and should be getting them next week. They should be hitting producion in about a month. Also am getting a custom front skid plate made up that will be made from 3/16th steel and will mount in front of the tranny skid and it will extend up to the bottom of the bumper. So no more worrying about the front diff with the piece of junk mopar skid.Would you guy's be interested in getting this in production if so I will talk with Rusty and tell him there is alot of interest in a front skid. |

I am the unfortunate person that Corwyyn spoke of. My shackle will mount either vertical or horizontal. The reason for mounting horizontal is if I get into a position where I need to be pulled form a 30 deg or higher horz angel I can turn the shackle so the load is placed more evenly on the thumb screw, ( all loads in same direction and not putting a push/pull load on the thumb screw). It just gives me more flexibility. But then again I could be wrong. |

So there are more than two holes in yours? I suppose you have to take the hitch pin out to change the angle? |

Nope, looks like I lied. It was actually $17 *before* shipping ($22 shipped) http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=6723&highlight=shackle They seem to be permanently sold out now, though. |

I just got that exact same receiver shackle from these guys: SPORTZTRAILERS for $23.00 shipped. I found them when looking on EBay for some KJ stuff. You can just call them and place the order. They're not the fastest shippers, but their prices are good. They also show a receiver shackle that looks like a Warn for $36.00. ***Edit*** I just looked at mine and it says SWL 4 & 3/4 T, 3/4", not WLL 4 & 3/4 T, 3/4". Don't know if there's a difference. I found Rancho RSX's there for much less then anywhere else as well. It took close to two weeks to get my order, but the price was right. |

SWL & WLL are essentially the same Safe Working Load Working Load Limit |

Safe Working Load Working Load Limit So would that mean the Safe Working Load for my receiver shackle is 9500 lbs (4 & 3/4 Tons)? I assume that is OK for the KJ? |

That would mean the SWL for the CLEVIS is 9500LBS...I couldnt say what the limit is for the other parts, including the hitch pin. The working limit is a weight that the clevis could be used for on a regular basis with no problems the actual breaking limit would be higher than that. IMO that is strong enough. Has anyone broken one yet? What did it take to do it? |

This is probably a real newbie question, but hey I'm new to all this stuff. When using the receiver shackle, how tight do you tighten the threaded pin on the shackle itself? Do you really wrench it down, only finger tight or somewhere in the middle? Common sense would say it should be tight, but how much I'm not sure. Thanks |

I would say hand tight is fine, that is all I have ever done when using them around heavy equipment. You just dont want it vibrating out. If you actually put enough strain on the clevis so that the ends try to pull apart it is only going to bind the pin in place anyhow. |

I tighten the pin on the clevis enough so that you need a tool to loosen it up. That way nobody will come by and walk off with my clevis. |

That is a good point, dont want it to get stolen if you leave it on there all the time. I used a grade 8 bolt instead of a hitch pin to attach my hitch rack when we went on vacation. (Im to cheap to buy a locking pin) |

The ones I use have a castellated nut and a cotter pin. That's more for preventing the nut from vibrating off than keeping it from being stolen, although you'd need pliers or something to get it off. |
