Post subject:  Mine Lick Creek (Baxter TN)

There's a little known but great off roading place located in Baxter TN along and around Mine Lick Creek. It offers everything for all levels of vehicles/drivers from just plain mudding to off road/trails and rock crawling. Most people call it "doo doo creek" instead of mine lick creek though. (EDIT the board replaced the real word with "doo doo" haha) To get down the 'driveway' you have to have a fair amount of clearance but to go most places you'll need 4wd. I have a stock 05 KJ Renegade and managed to turn the heads of my friends who had snobbed it by making it everywhere they went. I just drove it more carefully. I wish I had more pictures of the terrain and less of the vehicles but maybe I can fix that this weekend. There are several cascades, waterfalls, overlooks, creek beds, big rocks, trails running everywhere, etc.

To find it just search for "Pow Road" in Baxter TN and you should find it. Pow Road is the 'driveway' to it and runs straight into the creek (cross the creek and go up the other side then explore from there). Watch out for deep rutted puddles and 3ft (or more) drop offs in the creek bed and unseen rocks. Other than that my Jeep gets me most places down there.

Now for the pics. I'll probably add to these this weekend.

A good poser:

Cool pictures, have to look that area up. Any charge to get in, or who owns it? More information

I'm going to attempt to make some GPS logs of the trails and get better terrain pictures this weekend if the weather will cooperate. Most of the land is considered an "unmaintained local or rural road" according to my maps. No charge. I guess that explains why so many people in Baxter have buggys or just massive lifted trucks. There is one trail after crossing the creek at the medium sized waterfall (in 2 of the pictures) where there is a private property sign so I don't go that way. I would need about a 6 inch lift to make it down the trail anyways. That's no big sacrifice though because there's still plenty of trails. Usually there's 1 to 3 other vehicles out there besides my group.

I found some more pictures here http://www.cumberlandoffroad.com/1_07_mine_lick.htm here http://www.cumberlandoffroad.com/11_06_mine_lick.htm and here http://www.cumberlandoffroad.com/11_06_mine_lick.htm that are okay. Doesn't look like they took any pictures of the best spots though. There may be a different entrace or different section of the creek that they are exploring.

Here are a few more pictures I manged to dig up. Should be a whole bunch taken tomorrow though. That is if the weather will cooperate with me, it hasn't been good lately.

Here are some more pictures. In the next few days I should get a few more pictures from my friend. Check the captions.

After coming down the "driveway" (pow road) and crossing the creek you come up on a big flat area. This is a view of one of the trails leading out from there.

Here's a picture of a trail going back down into the creek

This is a picture of the same trail as above, just the opposite direction

After going down the creek, along a trail, and up a fairly steep muddy climb (for my highway tires) this is a picture of the trail going back down. It was too icey for me to drive down so I walked the rest of the trails taking pictures
Image

Here's a picture after going down the hill in the previous picture. This leads to the midsize falls.
Image

the view driving up the creek. The creek bed is very nice (not many big rocks or holes). In other parts of the creek there are some big drop offs to watch for.
Image

I haven't gone up the creek any farther from this point. I usually go to the left, back up onto land/trails which leads you to the trail that takes you to the midsize falls. I'm told that if you do go further up this part of the creek you end up at a very large waterfall. It's just too rocky for me to attempt with my KJ being stock.

I should have one more group of pics to post here soon from the same trip. The batteries died in one camera so we had to use another. There's one very nice picture of me climbing a 3ft cascade that I'm particularly proud of...[/img]

okay, here's the last of the pics

Just climbed this cascade. It's far more intimidating in person (to my stock liberty). There were a few guys on 4-wheelers sitting watching me like I was nuts to attempt it. It's about 2-3ft. Turned out to be not so bad, at the worst part I had about 3" clearance. Had everything to do with the angle of approach

Looking back at the cascade

finally, another view of one of the waterfalls

There are 2 common areas to camp and there's enough cleared out area in some places to just make your own. I've noticed the one site is very windy. I think it's the shape of the land around it but the site by the mid-sized falls is a good one and comes with a view. Several times I've been down there it was taken though.
