Post subject:  Borla Exhaust and offroading

I just installed the Mopar Borla Single side exhaust. The muffler is larger than stock and hangs down below where the stock one did. It is now slightly lower than the bracket holding the lower control arm. I was thinking that this might becomne a problem offroading because it might get hit if I go over a rock or something. I am worried that I may not have completely pushed the pipes together(Tailpipe to muffler) so that It might be hanging lower because of that. Does anyone have this exhaust? If so how low does the muffler hang down in relation to the LCA bracket?

As long as you never do anything like this, you should be just fine.

The Borla on my wifes KJ is Beat. The tip got bent up some into the bumper and the muffler is squashed from Moab 06. It might be getting replaced by a custom pipe and muffler once the RL rear bumper goes on. I am looking for a real small, thin muffler to go in it's place. I am not sure that pushing the pipes further together will gain you any clearance. Maybe see if a muffler shop can massage it some?

flowmaster just came out with a new "offroading" muffler that is supposed to be crush proof; you might want to look into that.

I've had good luck with their standard mufflers which hold up pretty well to rocks and crushing. I saw their new version though w/ the diamond plate style case.

I might try to unbolt the clamp and lift it as much as I can. I don't really do any heavy offroading right now, but I may in the future do more so I want to minimize damage to it. I think I'll just lift it as much as I can and then try to avoid big rocks or inclines, etc.

Fellow N.J. jeeper, take a good look at YOUR connection to the cat-converter. It is easy and very posible that the new Borala muffler is mounted upside-down. I have the Borla split pipe dual exhaust, which I had mounted upside-down and then noticed the problem of it hanging too low. Sure enough, turning it around brought it closer to the underside. That's alot of money to spend on something that was designed wrong. It's a quality system, but I had to reinforce the driverside pipe by adding another hanger to it, after bending the tail pipe during a Jeep-Jam last year.

Just build a skid plate for it, you'll be OK ha ha. Muffler shops can do some amazing things, I would let them look at it and see if they can do anything to help.
