Post subject:  boulder bar install q...

My jeep has the little brackets that i think used to hold side steps (i bought it used)

now i want to install some boulder bars - and these guys are in the way. but looking at them, i can see no way of removing the bolts... (the pics have a green tint as i have a green tarp on the gound)

are these bolts supposed to stay protruding or am i supposed to remove those when i take the brackets out?

any help would be appreciated.

I guess I'm not seeing the problem. Break out the deep well socket set or put a wrench on those nuts. If that doesn't work then I think a Dremmel with a cut off wheel definitely would...

the nuts i can take off easy enough... i guess i worded my initial question wrong...

the bolts...
are they welded in place (are the supposed to be there)?

are they removable (are they not supposed to be there?)

i apologize for the stupidness of my post - i just didn't want to take the brackets off and leave the bolts hanging w/out seeing what was what (it didnt look to me at least like the bolts could be taken out)

Well they are not factory, and they didn't get there by them self.Look behind the uni-body "frame" to see if you can see the othe side off the bolts or you may have to peek in the holes along the bottom edge.As for the one's by the pinch weld you may need to pill up the carpet on the inside to find the bolt holes. That is one crappy way of putting the bolts, who ever did that should be shot  .

You buy that puppy from a dealer? I've seen some dealers pull off all the after market stuff but leave the brackets and garbage in place, or even some factory accessories. Anyways I would imagine those are not welded in place and should come out through the panel one way or another.

i did that and couldnt figure out how the bolts got in that location aside from being factory placed. I couldnt see the head of the bolts from any angle

You may have to really look in the bottom rail holes, when I installed my rockrails I had to use a magnetic retreiver to put the bolts in place through the little holes along the bottom edge.Real tight but not that difficult.

I'll give that a look when there is more light and warmth tomorrow.

what about this riping of the carpet you spoke of... is they anyway to avoid doing that?

You don't need to rip anything up. They are Mopar's brackets for the side steps. Each pair of bolts is actually a single U-bolt. Notice how one side is longer than the other? Remove the nuts and the brackets, then LOOSELY REPLACE the nut on the longer side of each U-bolt (this will keep you from losing the U-bolt inside the frame. Then just push the bolt through (into the frame) on the short side. Then you can pull it free from the long side.
