Here's a question for you...

Given a 2.5" lift and 1" wheel spacers, will 265/75 R16s rub? Would this save us from the legendary pounding, cutting, or trimming the pinch weld, fender flares, etc?

Feedback appreciated, thanks, Ivan.

I believe you would still have to cut, beat, hammer, etc to get those to fit. I have seen those size tires on a KJ and they look awesome.

It seems things vary from Jeep to Jeep but I am fairly certain 265/75/R16s will require pounding the weld flat, and trimming with a 2.5" lift.

Pounding and trimming are unavoidable until a company makes a larger lift for the Liberty. Just be sure you don't cut the pinch weld. Doing so could cause it to seperate  Even after pounding and trimming, I still experience some rubbing with my 265/75R16's, 1.25" spacers, and a 2.5" lift.

How well is the fit for the 235/85-16's which are about the same height as the 265's? I know a few run the 235's, anyone have experience w/ the fit of those?

I know Moose runs them. He has a thread in the tires or photo section of the trimming he has done to the ole Jeep.

Bear in mind that spacers or reduced backspacing increases the likelihood that you'll need to trim.

I just got a set of 245/75 BFG Mud Terrains and they hardly rubbed at all before I put the spacers on. After putting the spacers on I had to pound down the pinch welds and I rub pretty badly near the fog light covers in front.

It's a trade-off. You need large enough spacing to not rub on the sway bar, but small enough to not severely rub the wheel well liners.

That's true--I was just trying to make the point that installing spacers won't help you avoid trimming plastic. Even 1/4" spacers (if such a thing existed) would move your tires closer to the pinch weld when you turn your wheels, increasing (not decreasing) the likelihood that you'll have to trim.

In any case, the wider stance is worth the trimming IMO.

My situation exactly.I think I'm going to use an aftermarket wheel with the most minimal backspacing. The good looking wheels are mostly 0 offset and thats already going to skate it out enough. The difference between 38mm stock offset to zero offset is going to have me reaching for my chop saw.

Big tires are good but won't you sacrafice mileage and gear ratio?

Yes, and larger tires, as a general rule, increase the likelihood of breaking some of the weaker driveline components. For the KJ, that includes the front diff and stock axle shafts.

Most of the hard-core offroaders on this forum spend a lot of money and effort strengthening the weak driveline components before they mount tires bigger than 31". Some also install the 4.10 gears from a 4-banger to partially address the gear ratio issue.

[EDIT: Corrected source of 4.10:1 gears per kolesy's post below.]

Right you are--I'll edit my post to avoid confusion. Thanks for catching that.

265/75 on the front you still need to do the pinch weld on the rear just take out the liner. I have the liner out on the front and back and just took off 2" spacers only rubbing was at full stuff in back.
I'm not positive about 02 compared to other lib.
With out the spacers it still rubs at full lock up front.---clik on pix

Post subject:  mods for 265/75 R16s?

Does anyone have pics of the pounding of the pinch weld and trimming and cutting they did to mount 265s? Would love to see what everyone is describing.

Do we really need to strengthen any components when running 265s? It doesn't seem like a dramatic increase in tire size. I didn't think it would add that much more stress. Am I off?

How much of a difference does switching to 4.10 gears make when running 265s? Is it worth it?

Ivan.

I don't have any pics but I think there is a wright up in the tech or fab section about pounding down the pinchweld.4:10's will dramatically increase power/mpg but is not cheap to do.265's are heavy so expect your wheel/rim to weigh 75-85lbs compared to I think 45lbs stock.Breaking will be effected to,Yukon makes stronger axles for the 8.25 and besides adding lockers/lsd's and better u-joints there is not much you can do to strenghten the drivetrain yet.I've been running 265 MT/R's for over 3 years with no problems.
