In fact, your knock-off statement may be the other way around considering which industry has been around longer. Hi-Lift is just a brand name for the type of jack, and that one you have found on ebay is also sold in the Northern Tool catologue (sp) and is probably fine for your purposes.

the knock offs you can buy locally here are supposedly crap, I personally would pay the extra $20

Also, I have found Northern to be reputable.

Has anyone tried the Larin brand? Im kind of skeptical about them, I have never seen the HI-LIFT brand, but the Larin seems a bit flimsy.

Edit: Sorry if I swayed off topic a bit....Actually I would like to know of anyoe elses experience with the harbor freight one, I think there is an outlet near me.

To me it is worth spending extra on the name brand when I am lifting a $20,000+ vehicle.

The knock-offs may well work fine, but I KNOW the Hi-Lift will hold up becuase many many offroaders use them. The knock-offs don't have as many case studies behind them that you can read about.

Just my $.02. Chinese casting is usually weaker, and that's why it's cheaper.

I work in the foundry industry, and although the chinese are improving their technology, pixel is right....they can be poor quality.

Haha! That makes me laugh. Troysterr bought a $10 heat gun to melt the plastic back after we pounded our pinch welds. We got his wheels off and had pounded one down. We were 5 minutes into using the heat gun and it just died. We hopped in my KJ and took the trip back to HF and got it replaced and luckily the second one did not fail (yet).

i have a stock height renegade, and probably won't be lifting until the warranty runs out, so would it be better to get the 48'' or the 60'' hi-lift?

Even when lifted, the 48" should do the job. Easier to stow too. I like the winching capability if it were ever needed. If there were no trees or big rocks around, (wish would be rare except on a beach) you could use a small boat anchor to winch off of. I think it is called a Danforth and it holds real well. Not that everyone has a boat anchor, but it is an idea.

You can purchase or make a chain kit that transforms your hi-lift into a come-along.

Yea. Getting back to the Danforth, it folds flat and comes in different sizes. Weighs about 8#. Good for dirt to if you high center. Has points that dig in, and to release, all you have to do is pull straight up. I use one in my #10000 sailboat.

check out www.pullpal.com for a winch anchor. I would hate to have to use one of those with a HI-Lift as the winching device though. Still better than stuck I supppose.
