Be moving forward between 2-5 MPH shift into neutral while still moving forward shift out of 4LO. Then shift back into Drive. Make sure you have about 20 ft or so to be moving straight ahead. |

stopped isn't sooo good unless you like gear grinding noises |

Never experienced that myself. If you're having difficulty engaging or disengaging then rolling can help, but being stopped has never been an issue for me. |

I also disengaged both ways, no problems, I just wanted to know the proper way to do it. |

As long as I have the tranny in neutal I've never had a problem shifting in or out of 4Lo stopped or moving slow. You don't want to shift from 4Full to 2WD while backing and turning out of a parking spot however. LOL. You want to be going straight with some room for that trick. |

yes, all transfercase shifting needs to be done while going in a straight line. Shifting in and out of 4lo, just be inching along, throw it in neutral really quickly and with the momentum you've still got quickly and firmly pull the lever up. shifting out is the same as shifting in, moving just a tiny bit, slip it in N real quick and then push the lever quickly into the 4hi position. Doing it quickly and firmly is the key, the gears are not synchronized, which is why they sometimes grind. It's not the end of the world, as long as you just grind them for a second. If you sat there and let them grind, that would be bad. I've found that shifting in/out of 4lo on a slight incline helps alot. You can do it while stopped, but it can be a lot harder, because the gears won't want to mesh most of the time. |
