Post subject:  Clevis Lift on 2006

I was looking under the front of my liberty today to see about doing a clevis lift and it looks like the clevis is already lowered to the bottom of the strut from the factory. If I move it lower some of the clevis will be below the strut, so the clevis will be partially on the strut. Is it possible that the clevis is lower from the factory on 2006 kjs??
I am the second owner of the car and I guess it is possible that the previous owner did a clevis lift but it seems unlikely, because it only had 10k miles and was ~6 months old when I got it.

In order to perform a clevis lift, you pull the clevis out of the clevis fork. You cannot push it further into the fork/clamp. :wink:

Look up some of the posts regarding clevis lifts and you will see what we mean. Your goal is to raise the strut up out of the clevis to get the amount of lift you want. When you see conduit nuts being used for the lift they are there to make sure that the strut does not slide back down into the clevis, which it should not anyways but, it also makes it very easy to make sure both sides are the same height. Keep asking the questions we have on here a vast amount of knowledge, some helpful, some well not so! :lol: :lol: :lol:

I read through the instructions to do it a few times and it still seems like I couldn't aise the strut any higher.(none of the strut is sticking out below the clevis). Right now I could fit a few washers or conduit nuts above the clevis.

You want to pull the strut UP out of the clevis. For example like you would be pulling the clevis down off the strut. You do not want any strut below the clevis, you want the strut up in the clevis. I know going around and around here trying to explain it

Maybe I'm just not understanding this clevis lift thing then :?:
From my understanding it seems like you could lift the strut higher in the clevis until the bottom of the strut is lined up with the bottom of the clevis. If you go any higher it seems like the strut would be partially pulled out of the clevis.
Here is a picture w/ stick figures of what mine looks like:(the periods where necessary because spaces where removed when i submitted this.)Clevis is Bolded, Strut is Red

...|||
...||| <-Strut w/ coil spring
...|||
....| <-Strut(and space where washers would fit)
|| | || <-Clevis w/ bottom of strut in it(bottom of strut flush w/ bottom of clevis clamp
|......|
|......| <-Clevis
|......|

Lifting the strut any higher would start to pull it out of the clevis.

I think I understood you on your first post.I think theres a tab on the strut cylinder so that it rest on the clevis when the strut is all the way down.You can pull the strut out and slip the amount of 1 1/2" inside diameter conduit nuts on the strut cylinder to gain lift.You could also measure and do the same thing but the conduit nuts gives a place to rest the strut while you tighten the clevis up.I'm not sure how much you can get by with but I don't think I would pull it out over half way.Maybe someone else will chime in and tell you how much you can get away with. :?:

You dont have to worry about the strut pulling out unless
1. you would forget to tighten it to specs
or 2. you would only have it in 1/3 of the way or less.
Mine (the strut)is actually only about 1/4 of an inch from the bottom for example so have plenty to hold it.

OK so basically I could just lift it up slightly ~1/4" and be ok

Science_Guy did a wonderful job with the pics and explanation...should give you a pretty good idea of how it will look. Very helpful.

I understand what you are saying 65thKJ. I only out 2 conduit nuts under my clevis. I didnt like pulling that much of the clevis out of the clamp. Many people pull it out further without any problems, but I didnt like the way it looked. I could just see it "green Sticking." :)

There is a pic of mine. I have the OME front struts and it has a lip that goes all the way around it that stops the nuts from sliding up the clevis. If you are using the stock struts, the nuts will slide past the notches. I believe everyone just puts a bunch of nuts under it till they hit the bottom of the spring perch. :wink:

That's exactly what I was worried about. Your picture is really helpful. I'll probably raise my strut out of the clevis to around where you have yours.

65thKJ,
what is your purpose for doing just a clevis lift in the front, are you trying to fit larger tires or what? Most people add a clevis lift to boost their existing lift in order to gain extra clearance.
I hope you realize that you'll also need to realign the front end after you do it.

I want to get rid of the rake that the kj has from the factory so that it sits more level from tto back. Also, I want to put on 245/70R16s when I get new tires.
I didn't realize that I would need an alignment too.

You can run 245 70s stock without doing anything, but if you want to just level it then thats different. Still will need to get an alignment just to be on the safe side
