Post subject:  Think my rear u-joints are toast

Hi All,

Got some nasty vibration from 30-60 on acceleration. Thinking with 70k on the clock, 3ish inches of lift and slightly extended rear arms, the u-joints are toast. Since I subscribe to the "When it breaks, upgrade it" philosophy, looks like a SYE upgrade may be in my near future.

Problem is, I've never done something like this and don't know of any shops in the area I would trust (or could afford) to do the work. I have a great mechanic in the family who could help me do the work once I figure out what I need to do. I'm looking for some guidance from you guys that have done it. Parts needed?? Part numbers?? Sources??

Need to get this fixed before we head out west for Moab on 4/14.

BTW I have a Command-track (231) transfer case.

Thanks in advance,

My vibration was at 30 to 45 when mine went at 53000 miles. So yes you are ready i would say.

Keep good notes on the SYE, i have been thinking about it

Good luck

Do they have a SYE for a selec trac? I think that is what I have, What is the model # for my case?

I think 242 for Select-Track. Don't quote me on that though.

Hey Don,

I did the SYE in my Wrangler w/ a 231 and it was easy. Don't be intimidated. The biggest trick is to make sure you have some good lock ring pliers.

Easy, huh? Looks pretty involved in the installation instructions I've seen, but maybe that just because I've never done it. Maybe I'll have to have a SYE party :D

After looking around, I'm thinking this kit from Tom Wood might be the way to go. Include Tom Wood's custom driveshaft

Advance Adapters Conversion with CV drive shaft using the XC or XB Slip Yoke & spline stub is $525

Any thoughts?

I got my kit from offroadtoystore.com for about the same price. They run free shipping often, and I may even be able to dig up a coupon for you. Instead of AA SYE, I got the JB Conversions Super-Short YE - thus your DS can be about 2 inches longer.

Yep, that's the one. I just looked through my e-mail and can't seem to find a coupon for them, sorry. Dennis ordered his from this place as well, we both had good experiences. They drop ship the orders, so the SSYE and DS come seperately. I got my SSYE about 4 days before I got the DS.
