Post subject:  rusty's question...why so much noise? ***vids added at end**

We installed the rustys 2.5 coil lift yesterday. Why does the front sound like its going to fall apart when I hit bumps. My buddy says that is normal, and I completely trust him, He said his did the same the entire time he owned it. It really sounds like the stut assemebly is moving around (like we forgot to tighten something...but everything is tight). Just to double check and settle my nerves, is everyone getting this :?: , and why the heck does it happen :?: :!:

**I have not contact anywhere**

Are you talking about going over a speed bump or just typical bumps in the road? Holes also?

this probably would happen over a speed bump, def in potholes, not so much on regualr bumps in the road. Offroad it is very very noticeable (i've driven more off road than on since the lift was put on).

Sounds like the noise I got from my sway-bar linkage arm bushings when they went. washboard roads were the worst. I actually took mine to the dealership and got them replaced. Solved the noise but, if they raise a fuss about it having a lift, you might have to pay for them yourself. They didn't even notice that I had a lift, still not sure if I should have been worried about that.

W/O actually hearing it, I would say it is the normal sound of the lift. I got it and have it when going over speed bumps. No clunking noise on small road bumps or basic potholes.

check the dust covers on teh front shocks. If one is loose, it will rattle. Mine did and it took me forever to find it.

Ok, I have one, when I had my shock put together I remember thinking that the dust boot was lopsided, and I remember thinking that it may be on crooked (with part of the lip misaligned. How do I fix this?

I didn't install the dust covers. So does yours make any noise offroad?

I know there are more people on here with rustys lift........are they experiencing this or is it quiet?

I have the rustys front springs with OME shocks and it makes NO noises..

I also have had ZERO strange sounds since having it on... it's sounds stock to me (or better since I'm not hitting the bumpstops anymore).

Anyways... No clunking or sounds at all.... and I'd notice.... and probably flip out.

I had my lift installed at a suspension place though. So I can't comment on the install process.

That is exactly what I was thinking, but was unsure. Also, thank you for giving me a technical response. At least this gives me a shot to check something, if that doesn't work then its onto more digging. Thank you everyone else for you responses too, I don't want to be driving around an unsafe vehicle. If there is any more advice out there, feel free to chime in.

thanks

When I had my Rusty's lift on it sounded bad re-checked the entire installation of the lift etc, replaced endlinks, sway bar bushings etc, the rear shocks and after all was said and done it was the fricken dust boots actually the passenger side one was loose so we just ended up taking them both off now everything is nice and quiet...the only time I get any noise is from the heavier front springs on a major bump and that is usually when it is colder out or the Kj has been sitting awhile, hope this helped :)

I would say to check the sway bar. I had some strange popping noises a few months after I first wheeled with my lift. It turned out to be the sway bar link that worked its way loose.

ok....here are two videos to help explain what I'm talking about, no they arent the best (if one isn't coming up please wait for youtube to catch up). I loosend all the nuts and bolts we did durinng the install, then retightened them as per TJKJs post. but I still have the noise.

this one the camera is pointing down at the top strut mount bolts. air box is removed. I'm pressing down on the top of the body. its sounds like change rattling and something nasty!! I can hear this even louder when I drive. The sound def seems to be coming from the top of the strut

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xw873_sdt0o

this one is during driving. at 20 to 38 seconds you can really hear the rattling. It sounds like the stut assembly is moving around.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5U0Ko9uc5B0

****when we put the single nut on top of the strut and strut plate we tightened it till there was one thread showing, should it be tighter???? could this be the problem?**** how tight should that nut be? I know the more info the better, we didnt exactly torqe the nuts, we just tighted the S*** outta them. I really don't want to pull the front end apart again, but I may have to.

That top strut nut probally stripped out or is not torque correctly,I have Rancho struts and had about 3/8" of threads showing after tighting not including the "nut" on top of the struct to hold the shaft from turning, and it has corse threads.Did the OME struts have course or fine threads? The original SkyJacker struts had fine threads and I had a problem with the strut nuts stripping off the struts(went through like 5 struts).Oh by the way the torquing method is not a way to eliminate noises(unless you had loose bolts) but to extend the life of your bushings.

Might be quicker to remove front swaybar and see if noise goes away.DON"T drive on the street at very high speeds during this test,as the stability will not be very good.If the noise is still there, look to make sure upper balljoint is not contacting coil spring.

honestly i can't tell you if the threads are fine or coarse. I would figure OME would have the best quality and those would not stip out.

There is not UBJ contact, plenty of clearance.

ps..both videos are working now.
