I was on another site and reading that Lions Back in Moab is closing down. Apparently the house that you paid the money too was bought out by a developer and he is bull dozing the entrance and putting up condos....

:(

Anyone in a Liberty run it?
Joe

Well if this is true I'm really disgusted with this bubble that Greenspan made ...

I thought that Moab was entirley contained within Moab National Recreation Area-meaning it's NOT for sale? I hate developers...

Moab is just the name of the little town in the area. There is everything from BLM land, National Parks, National Recreation Areas, to private land is the area surrounding the town. The area where most people wheel is not contained to one particular area, there is probably over few 100 square miles that most of the outdoor activities take place. Even outside of that area there is still plenty of open land. Southern Utah is not very developed.

Also if I remember correctly (never did lions back) but it is just one obstacle, not an entire trail or area.

Yeah, but I thought that all the trails there were contained within the NRecA. I've never been there though, and truthfully don't know that much about it other than that there is AWESOME mountain biking and jeeping there. I thought all the trails were inside the park though. I still loathe developers.

To get to Lions Back you have to cross private land which it sounds like someone bought up and isn't allowing anyone to cross it to access LB.
Last I heard, you had to pay to access it which is the same situation as the Dump Bump obstacle which actually ends up on part of the Hells Revenge trail which is on BLM land. LB itself isn't owned by anyone AFAIK. Though I have never really been too interested in driving on it, it is a bummer that now I or others may never get to.

Yeah sucks that it is closing, but NRecA is just a small portion of the area. I think that is the mistake people make, especially people that have not been wheeling/hiking/camping out west is that it is not just one or two National Park/Recreation areas, like it is quiet frequently out east. There are just huge expanses of open areas, thounds of square miles, not just a few thousand acres or square mile or two. The moab wheeling area can be considered the whole southwest corner of Utah, almost a 1/4 of the state.

Either way I'd rather see it close and I hate closures as much as anyone.

This is the third year that Lion's Back has been closed. It's been closed so long it's clean--all of the tire tracks have been washed off by rain. I don't think that the condos are the reason it was closed down. If I am reading this correctly, UTL shut down their portion of Lion's Back in April of 2005 because of the yahoos that turned it into a garbage dump every year. So, the owner of the entrance could no longer collect revenue from it and decided to sell it.

IMO, a trail is far more likely to be shut down because of the idiotic behavior of drunk kids and irresponsible adults than the Sierra Club or SUWA. The MUD Fund can fight the environmentalists...they can't do a thing about morons.

True, plus the yahoo's reinforce the SC's or SUWA's idea that all 4-wheelers are irresponsible and generate merit for trail closures.
