ok,,, after installing the larger tires on the KJ,,, we tend to discover that the plastic cover won't fit full size spare
now where can i find a spacer to hang the spare tire with full size,,, say 245/75 R16 without the hastle of the tailgate

My BFG AT KO 245/75/16 spare fits just fine. You can look at some pictures below. I have a 2005 Sport, so maybe the spare tire space is a bit larger than in older models??

I just got 235/70-16s installed and the spare has plenty of room - I'll try to get a picture posted soon.

i have 255/70-16s and the spare has more then enough room. i think you would have to pretty big for it not to fit or if you changed rims

Are you talking about the plastic spare tire cover that swings like a gate?

http://www.green-eyed-monster.com/spare_on.jpg

Like that? That's Ed's KJ, I believe he had to cut some of it.

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... php?t=1560

He talks about it here, also you can see more of his KJ which looks awesome if you ask me.

With a 246/75R16, when I first bought them, the glass contacted the tire when I opened it but would slip by it on its own. Now that I have done a couple of 5-tire rotations, the glass no longer touches the tire. The only way I noticed that it touched the tire was when I was closing the glass.

When the tires were new, the edge of the rear glass, right where the latch is, would just barely touch the edge of one of the knobs on my spare as I was opening the glass only. The gas shocks that open the glass would push the glass past the tire, so you can tell the contact was minimal. I didn't even notice it had happened until I went to close the window and felt the glass rub the tire. It actually took me three times to see that it was actually rubbing the tire. Now that I have rotated the tires a couple of times (rotating the spare in while rotating out one of the tires I had driven on), my tires have worn down a bit and the glass no longer touches the spare when I open it.

By the way, I brought this up because of your question earlier.

Low tech fix....place a nut or some washers on the spare tire lug..then put the wheel on and tighten it down. Your tire will be further away from the rear gate. Just might make the difference.

ND4SPD: I have nothing for the tire cover, however, I installed a spare tire extension after mounting LT255/75/R16 BFG AT's. You can get somewhat of a idea how much space btw the tire & rear of the KJ was gained HERE. Admittly a bit of overkill however the extension mount also raised the tire slightly due to the way the extension mounts to the oem tire carrier.

the only thing you need to worry about is weight of tire and wheel, tailgate is only rated at 50 lbs.

Well, in Mexico, that's an option. Most of the Libbys here come without a cover, unless you order it.

Go down to your friendly hardware store and find a half dozen flat washers that will fit on the studs, then place them on the stud(s) before mounting your spare. Gives a bit more room for the glass to clear when opening. You may want to put more washers on the top stud(s) to make it angle a bit. Sorry, just woke up and can't remember if there are one or two studs on top...

Now if ya'll will excuse me, I'm goin' wheelin'!
