Newbie question What is the difference between lowered and pre-lowered what did they exactly change. Is there a difference in liftkits for a lowered and pre-lowered |

Search must not work anymore Pre-lowered had taller springs don't know exactly the cut off date (I believe it's 03+ that are lowered). Lifts are the same but you won't get as much in a pre-lowered |

I think is was mid 02 - when they switched When the Liberty was 1st introduced some magazine editor ran it through a slalom course & rolled one - Chrylser panic'ed and immediately shortened the springs. If you do a lift that replaces the springs - then you're at the same height, however if you do any kind of spacer lift - the prelowered will be about an inch higher (it's never been clear to me if the 2 1/5 inch lift limit was calculated on the lowered or prelowered) |

Makes you wonder if the pre-lowered KJs are having balljoint problems a little. K |

From the FAQs section Lowered KJ - KJs were lowered 3/4" after April 2, 2002. This was done to help lower the chances of accidental roll-overs. Pre-Lowered - Early 2002 model KJs were 3/4" taller than lowered KJs, they were manufactured before April 2, 2002. |

The search never really works very well. I have a pre-lowered. My dad just got an 05, which is obviously lowered. When they sit next to each other, they looke exactly the same height. My conclusion is that by now all the prelowered Libbys have sagged enough that it doesnt make any difference. |

jerbacher wrote: The search never really works very well. The searchengine did not give me the information I wanted. Tnx for the answers. So only the springs were 3/4 " lowered. For the backsite now it is clear for me. The front I still do not understand The struts are the same for lowered and pre-lowered ? I think that the length of the strut is the only thing that specifies the height. A shorter or a longer spring will only give less or more preload on the strut and has a lesser influence I can ad 2 or more spacers and will end up with the same height as 1 spacer and a very very stiff ride please advise the stupid dutch guy |

springs determine how high or low a vehicle is, not the struts or shocks. Struts and shocks control the dampening effect of the springs. |
Makes you wonder if the pre-lowered KJs are having balljoint problems a little. K
mine has had no problems at all, at 45000 miles with the original balljoints, i had no play on one side and negligible amount on the other. only let them do the last ball joint recall cuz i thought i had to. these better be just as good in 50000 |

Mine was manufactured December 2001 or January 2002 (I can't remember anymore) but I never had any problems with my LBJ's either |

Eye to eye height...you really can't ever tell the difference and if you can it's not much. The difference I noticed when comparing my pre-lowered sport to an 03' non pre-lowered was the height between the wheel wells. I noticed a difference with both a CRD and the 03', and the difference is very distinct. It's really not much...but its the only way to tell. My sport has 86K logged |

The gas libertys are all pretty much the same except for the springs. The CRDs are the odd ball of the bunch. The CRD's front frame rail is about 3/4" lower than the gassers, so the front differential sits about a 3/4" lower. The CRD theoretically could be lifted 3/4 more than a gasser. |

Not to mention the cradle is lower so the CVs aren't as flexed as a gasser when lifted. This could be an advantage but at the same time allows for possibly more lift if the UBJ contact is minimal. But I'm sure there are more problems... |

I disagree. I notice a lot of '02 KJs (with the 4x4 badge under the rear side windows) and they sit noticeably taller than newer stock models. Tomorrow I will park next to the white pre-lowered KJ in my office parking lot and take pictures (front, rear, and side view) for comparison purposes. With a 1.5" spacer in my front struts, my hood line sits only about 1/2" taller than the stock 2002. That's why I'm still looking for pre-lowered springs. My back end is right where I want it, but I want another 1/2" in the front. My only low-cost options are installing Daystar upper strut plates, pre-lowered springs, or a clevis lift. I think changing springs will give me the best ride, as I don't want to compress my existing springs any further. |
