since the search feature sucks. What is everyone running for a gas tank skid? I will be doing a decent amount of off roading but it seems the gas tank barely gets hit. I do have one mark on it from the last time i went so i figure its time to get one and would like some opinions.

Get one any one but you NEED one for off roading
The fuel tank is HDPE ,fancy plastic
just think of it like this You can break a front diff and still get home ,pull the CV shafts
If you break the fuel tank it will 99.9% be on the bottom where it hits something and then what?
even with the mopar skid it will bend buy it will not allow something to rip open the plastic fuel tank

and as far as not hitting it
I have more dents and dings in the skid on my TJ then I can count so it is not a if you hit it hard but when you hit it that counts

I would go kiliby
It does not "tuck" it like the one for the TJ but their stuff seams strong
for cheep just go mopar

I got a Kilby from a scratch and dent sale on eBay for less than a Mopar one and its waaaaaay heavier, brand new, never used. Plus I thought ...scratch and dent , well thats what I want it for anyways   Keep searching for the good deals, but you need something back there like jason said theres always that ONE time

I have skid row's. You should call and get one while you order the front engine skid. Kilby's is beefier though. Dont listen to these mopar lightweights. Why else would stock skids be the first to go on any other Jeep? This is the only place where you'll hear mopar is good enough.

This is not the tank skid, but you can see Mopar stuff sucks.

Mopar is good enough, for the front engine skid. I'd skip them for anything else if you think you'll really use them. The Mopar ones are cheaper, but they're cheaper too.

Mopar front, All J Super Skid and Kilby's gas skid and you're rocking.

... not that I disagree with a skid. I COMPLETELY do, but the HDPE tanks are remarkably durable, so lets not give them a bad rap. I remember reading some testing regarding puncture/rip/crush testing for some off-road application fuel tanks and they fared better than a comparable steel tank in every regard. There's a reason that the US miliraty uses HDPE MFCs instead of the NATO wedeco jerrycans. You can fire a bullet into a HDPE can or drop it into a fire and it won't explode. So, the moral is, love your HDPE tank for how great it is and also get a skid.

I wheeled in the Colorado Rockies with a Mopar gas tank skid for about 3 years. It had been hit a few times with some jagged rocks that would have cut the HDPE gas tank. It worked well for what it was but I finally did it in. I backed into a stump I couldn't see at a camp site and the Mopar skid crushed in pretty well so it was time to replace it. Rock Lizard managed to get me a smoking deal on a scratch and dent Kilby through one of his resources. Ths thing is so strong I will never have to worry about my gas tank again.

Just as a reference, the kind of wheeling I've done has caused my Super Skid II to gain a nice gentle arc from absorbing a few very solid hits. My Mopar gas tank skid had absorbed a couple of the same hits so unless you are going through some very rocky terrain, you might want to just go with the Mopar skid. This is just my opinion so don't take it as gospel. Take into consideration the type of wheeling you do and everyone's opinions, then make an informed decision. Either way, I think something is better than nothing.
