2 weeks ago, the front end started clunking. You could feel the clunks through the steering wheel. Never clunked above 35 MPH, and only when under power. It didn't always clunk, but when it did it happened once at 4 mph, three times between 18-20 mph & twice more at 30mph. At first, it didn't matter if I was turning or not, but after awhile it would clunk more when I turned right. So I think drive shaft, or CV joints. I found that I could shake the drive shaft about 2mm, but when I jacked up the right wheel to check the CVs, the wheel moved in a lot. The ball joint was shot & it wore the LCA ball joint socket into an oval. I thought the ball joint was the trouble so I replaced them with Moogs and a right LCA. While it was apart, I did a 1/2 inch clevis lift. While taking it to get an alignment, It still made clunking noises& more of them, but handled much better. So I removed the front drive shaft, & the clunks went away... But were replaced by a scraping sound. I engaged 4X4, & the T-case makes a horrible grinding noise, but it's a different noise & from a different spot |

I experienced the same front end mystery hoise this winter, nearly every time I engaged 4HI. Happened regardless of speed, but seemed to fluctuate with wheel speed. I'd swear it was bearings but don't understand why only the 4WD caused the noise. I described it to my dealer as a "clanking" sound -- sounded like metal on metal -- and had them check it out. Of course, they put it on the lift and test drive it, and they can't duplicate the problem. Noise never came back and everything's been good and dealer approved since. Very weird. I believe it could have been from a socket from a wrench that I lost down there while installing my lift kit. Perhaps it just vibrated loose on the way to the dealership that morning... I've been wheeling since and my Command-Trac system works flawlessly. Good luck! |

I had the clunking when starting forward or backward. I had the dealer check they told me it was the Rack and Pinion. I had a 4 wheeler friend check and he said it was the bushing in the lower control arm. the dealer replaced it but it still clunked they replaced the Rack and Pinion under warranty even though I was 5000 miles out of warranty. the noise went away. |
