after researching every tire out there, i bought the tires that were the most right for us. our jeep will be sittin in the garage for most of the warm months except for rare play times. its now mainly our comfortable, reliable, winter transportation, since it can snow a few feet over night here.

winterforce M+S 225/70 - 16

and only $62 each they will probably see 3-5k a year and many years. they are supposed to be awesome on dirt, rocks and mud as much as ice and snow. cant wait til tues.

does anyone else use winter tires?

I use winter tires about 6-7 months of the year, currently studded Nokians. For summer use I am now using Grabber AT2s. We get some bad road conditions for a lot of the winter, and the Nokians are great. We get bad road conditions for a lot of the summer too. The Grabbers seem to be great tires for rough roads.

the stock 235/70 16 RSAs have only 5k miles on them, originally took them off at 500 miles. had a few flats and put them back on. had a few more lately so... got my new winterforce tires in the mail yesterday afternoon, will have them put on later today probably. next to the the stock ones, these 225/70 16s are about 1/4" taller, unmounted, and tread is almost 1/2" wider. very deep, knarly tread, im so stoked. they are gunna rock with their wide gaps and directional tread. and were a couple pounds lighter each.

i would think winter tires with their soft tread and tons of sipes would be almost ideal for rock crawling, except for the usually tame sidewalls. wish i did more of that, rubicon is only an hour and a half away, never been.

thats what i thought, i guess jeep can take them up the rubicon to certify them but us enthusiasts with the same thing or slightly better should just stay home and think about it apparently.

anyways, got the tires on, they look kickass, dont really hear anything, handle great, same height as stock, more square profile, so not as much sidewall hanging out (prob 1/4" more clearance inboard up front) and a little narrower overall with a 1/2" wider treadwidth.

we'll still have fun driving by ourselves on the 2 tracks since we're not welcome on the real thing.

Problem is they took a Long time and stacked the trail w/ rocks (Paved it) to get a stock Lib through the Con. It also sustained some damage in the process. Many tough trails are doable in fairly mild 4x4's it is just a matter of how much time and effort you want to spend doing it. I have seen pics of old CJ's on 29's doing some crazy trails but they used boards and stacked rocks then also winched to get through the trail and took days to do trails that a well equipped Jeep could do in much less time.

BTW, Where is it that you live anyhow?
