Roof question

Do i need the cross rails to run this or do i need those expensive clips they offer at the bottom? Any experience?

The clips make hookup a lot easier, however, look around there are some guys here who have used U joints to secure and it works fine.

Yea im not gonna spend that money if i can fab up something myself.

8 U-bolts holding mine on. I think they cost about $12 total.
