powerline roads

Post subject:  powerline roads
So, often when I'm driving around I see little dirt roads going along under the huge powerlines. Are these just access roads for the power company mantainence? If so, whats the policy on whether or not I'm alowed to drive on these. Some of them look kinda fun for a quick detour on my way home from work. :D

Private property ... usually the utilities company gets an "access easement" from the property owner(s) along the route, but enforcement is another matter entirely :twisted:

(of course since the route is probably on land owned by several different groups of people, their idea of enforcement can and will very likely vary)

I've driven on powerline and gas pipeline roads all over the Southwest from west Texas to Southern California and I don't recall ever seeing one posted. Maybe it varies based on what part of the country you're in.

theres a lot more population here then the SW. these roads are usually pretty close to people's houses.

I know here in New England thats a BIG NO NO minimum of a $350 fine if your caught

I wouldn't risk it no matter where you live

Hey jeepjeepster, you could really detail the undercarriage if you did this to yours!! :lol:

But back to power lines a lot of the land in Ohio they pay for right of way but the land owner still has control of the land, so most do not want you running around on them.

Jerrbacher......I can tell you first hand that my brother-in-laws brother owns property near Ceasers Creek Lake in Waynesville Ohio,and he leases the rights to the power company ONLY.He is still the land owner and has to run the deer hunters off every year.With his consent,the power company post signs saying "DANGER HIGH VOLTAGE AREA PLEASE KEEP OUT".....or in other words.....Your trespassing.

The laws on this will vary state by state and even within a state. The road can be private property or built on public land. Even if public land, laws may prohibit non-utility traffic on the road. All these things will factor into each specific instance. Asking someone local is your best bet. The local 4x4 group should know.
