Post subject:  Steering wheel unstable with bigger tires?

Hey,

Since I installed my lift and tires, my steering wheel is very unstable when going over rough roads. For example, I am driving over a cobblestone road and my steering wheel rocks back and forth very fast. It feels like the tires are directly connected to the steering wheel...... Is that normal? Maybe its just the tire size.

Also, when I am driving faster than say 50, the vehicle seems to kinda "float" or hover a little bit.

Dumb question but...
You had a front end alignment after the lift, correct?

I noticed the same thing when I had 255/70/16 tires.. I personally believe those are to wide and I do not notice a problem running the 245/70/16 tires.

I guess i kind of notice it a as well, Only on very rough roads. It doesnt really bother me. I think it drives more like a jeep should in my opinion!

Those are very wide tires, and the aspect ratio is slightlt lower so they will tend to follow the irregularities of the road more than a thin tire. Play around a little with the pressure. Increase it a little in the front and decrease the rear (only if you drive empty most of the time). This will shift some of the weight from the front to the rear, plus there will be slight decrease in the contact patch.

"It's a Jeep thing..." :D

Mine does the same with the lift and stock wheels and tires. And yes it looks retarded with the SRA's.

Can't imagine what it will be like with the 265/75s...

I notice when i hit a pot-hole or something and the wheel shoots to one side, dosn't bother me but then again im still waiting to do my front alignment after lift and tires. Waiting for everything to settle.

A set of e-rated tires (stiff side walls) or very heavy tires will do that. They don't absorb as much of the small bump and thus translate them to the steering and suspension more. For example even with a set 245/75/16 P rated tires it is hardly different than stock, however with a set of 245/75/16 Goodyear MTRs (heavy e-rated tires) it has the same effect you describe. Same size tires, one is just a much heavier stiffer tires so it translates more of the small bumps to the suspension and steering.

it's the lift... the suspension and steering geometry are different now...
think about your tie rods... they used to be relatively flat.... and going over bumps, very little energy was transferred to the steering rack via the tie rods...

now that it's lifted... especially with the toe set correctly, your tie rods angle down... so... when you drive over a bump, the tie rod gets pushed up with the knuckle, but since it's at an angle now, the upward motion of the wheel/knuckle translates into inward motion of the tie rod... and thus, the steering rack and you feel it in the steering wheel...

Which wears out the rack quicker.

I do not have any bumpsteer with my rustys lift.. I would say its more noticeable with the Franken lift though..
