Just wondering if this can be done......

Can Trak-Lock (mopar's) be put in a non-rennie?

Is it major surgery?

I know about ARB's air locker and
the Detroit locker, and Spidertrax...

Just wondering and exploring options.....

If you're going to do that you may as well put one of the better aftermarket LSDs in though. I'd recommend a Detroit TruTrac.

a "lunch-box" locker, such as the powertrax, would be easier to install. A full swap, such as the ARB or the Detroit (both great names), is a job for a pro.

full swap:
locker $500
install $500

powertrax
locker $250
install free (if you do it)

just something to consider. Eddo has installed a few PowerTrax and has run one for a while and loves it on and off road....

Oh, and I have a TrakLoc in my Unlimited... I can't tell that it's not an open diff :(

Do what "Jump" said.

By the time you get the aftermarket trac-loc system for the open case its gonna cost ya.

If the dealer does it, they will install the factory trac-loc case (swapping the axle) so its gonna cost ya more money.

If you really use a powertrax, it can break, mine did. It has these little peckerwood pins (weak point) that can cause you a world of hurt. Mine shattered in 10 degree weather, 700 miles from home.

Is ARB the only selectable (on/off) locker?

I have the same issue with mine. First time I took it out I got stuck... Only one rear wheel was spinning. Should be called CrapLok ;)

Those are not fully selectable lockers either, they are clutch based LSD's and when you flip the switch it locks up,they where out after time and need to be rebuilt. The only 3 full selectable lockers out there are the Detriot electric locker(no 8.25 option,d30 is coming soon),ARB air locker(both d30 and 8.25 available),and the OX cable operated locker(no 8.25 option,d30 option but can not use in the KJ due to the required use of a different diff cover).

Auburn limited slip was like 350 and only 189 to install professionally. So much better than the trac loc and the powertrax. i have had both. auburn and detroit are very smooth and transfer power good enough for 95 % of the people who use them.

from what everyone says the powertrax is great if you have an automatic if you have a manual tranny you have driveline lash problems. when i had the powertrax it was horrible it made my jeep shift bad and made lots of noise.

And are alot weaker than lockers or LSD's that replace the entire carrier. When you put a "lunch box" locker like the powertrax you just replace the spider gears in the OEM carrier, and aftermarket LSD/locker like the TrueTrac or ARB will replace the carrier with a much stronger one.

I have and automatic maybe that's why. I do have some backlash but nothing I can't live with. Didn't have the dough-re-mi for the ARB which is the state of the art! Joe

the locker probably will not fail but the carrier will
I have seen them break in jeeps with no locker so add a locker and that is just asking for trouble

Randy's Ring & Pinion doesn't sell the Powertrax anymore, at least for D44, because too many were being warrantied.

Look folks, The noslip works real well for some users, but the driver pins that help it function are the weakest point in your whole axle. The carrier and axle are much stronger than the no-slip driver pins. They are made of a nickel steel alloy with a snake-oil name.

I don't think the Lock-Right has driver pins, even though it may be more harsh, it is tuff.

When the driver pins snap, you will have fragments rolling around in your housing which at any point can cause a major catastrophe.

You WILL NOT be as lucky as I to say "screw it", then drive 750 miles with the broken noslip, I AM SPECIAL.

Go with the ARB

If you want a lunchbox locker, your gonna have bumps and bangs anyway, might as well go with the lockright. At least when it bangs you don't have to wonder if its the driver pins.
