How are we liberty owners supposed to make use of the hi lift? Certainly we can't use our "bumpers"... |

Well if you have rock rails you can lift from that, or if you only have to lift a few inches you can use the tow hitch socket. Hi lifts can also work well if you do not have a winch by using two tow straps. You can also buy a special attachment that they make that allows you to put two hooks into the openings in your wheels and lift from there. I personally think that they are a good investment. |

They can be worth their weight in gold if you know how to use all their features and you Need those features. They can also be very dangerous in the wrong hands. If you get one, I highly suggest practicing with it in your driveway or yard and be sure to know how to use it and be safe. I use mine on my boulderbars and now on my steel bumpers (or could but haven't yet) In all the wheeling I have done in the past few years I have personally used a hi-lift about 4 times and I have seen others use them probably the same amount. Most times off road the best and safest way to lift a vehicle to fix a flat or stack rocks under a tire is by using a bottle or scissor jack. If you can get a scissor jack out of a full size chevy they work great in many situations and are usually easy to get under the vehicle and they usually will fit under the back seat. |

And if you use them on your KJ Sliders or Rear Reciever...open the door that is near the point so when the vehicle leans...you won't end up with body damage. A standard Hi-Lift will fit under the rear passenger seat with the bottom foot pulled off the Hi-Jack...it stays in place and out of the way. |

I used to have a video somewhere of me using one.....can't seem to locate it though. Here is me hi-lifting my old roommates exploder out of our back yard
Here is how you set it up. I find that it helps to have a heavy duty racheting strap on one end, and a fixed strap on the other end. That way you can pull your 48 or 60", and then tighten up and go another 48 or 60". I've had to do this many many many times!! Such things happen when you and all of your friends have pretty capable jeeps, good trails, but just not enough extra $$ for a winch!! This was actually a 3-hi-lift recovery effort!! Two pulling forward, one jacking the undercarriage out of the mud! It always happens that the one friend who actually has a winch is never available when it's needed!! I know this pic isn't pretty, and guys on jeepin will yell at me for posting it again....but it is a hi-lift in action. Ignore the man-boobs! Oh, all three of these stucks happen to be in the exact same spot. It is the infamous mud hole. Exploder on 30" ATs, ZJ on 31" Truxus' locked front and rear, and XJ on 39.5" Iroks, locked front and rear. It doesn't even look like a mud hole until you get into it and can't move!

Hey, I didn't take the picture!! But it's a pretty good shot of someone using a hi-lift as a winch. That's what I use it for most of the time, and most of the people that I wheel with do as well. Even if you don't have rocker guards, you can bring along a piece of wood to distribute the load of the hi-lift on your rockers, or even your bumpers. I've used mine on my stock XJ bumpers. I just use it right next to the mount. They're by no means straight, but I've changed a tire like that. I'm not claiming that it's safe by any means....but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Also, I carry a piece of 3/16 plate in the back of my jeep that I use as a hi-lift base when it's really muddy. It was free, and works better than the actual base that they've got for sale. If you're wheeling in an area with slate or shale or rock outcrops with unroofing fractures (in english, rocks that are flat) you may be able to find one to use as a base for jacking....but it always helps to be prepared. |

A Hi-lift and Clint saved my butt in Big Bear one year. Would have been so stuck without it. |

That's your back yard? I don't think I can even fit an Exploder in my back yard. |

475 acres of mountain side and timber....abutting thousands more. All three vehicles are stuck in the same hole there. This is where it flattens out after a steep hillclimb and there is a depression, and then it goes up again on two sides. It's a low point right where they are, a mini peat bog....and they didn't quite understand my directions not to go that way. It's the perfect little trap, bushes grow around it, and it looks dry on the surface....then you just sink into a tiny 50x80' bog. Tires dig down through the saturated peaty soil, and the frame sits on top of the peat. The rocky parts are the good parts, and there is no shortage of them. Most of them are too steep to climb with a vehicle....but we try just about every one we can!! Here we are stuck at the beginning of the trail, about 120 yards from the house!
TJ on 35" boggers locked F/R stuck in the same spot 5 minutes later. We just broke through the ice in a thin spot, and no ones tires could pull them out of the thick shelf
