well i got a little intimidated....tryed to install my rustys coil lift last night. Did the rear all by myself in about and hr or 2. That was the easy part as i just kinda looked at it and decided what i needed to take off and put back on. Well later I go to do the front of the lift....get most of the oneside apart and then we cant get the UBL to seperate from the steering knuckle.....so I am wondering if there is a secret to that comming apart. My jeep has a lot of rake right now and i have to have the seat leaned gangsta just so i can sit level. Also will it be alright if i drive with just the rear installed til i get the front done....

Loosen the upper ball joint nut but dont take the nut completely off. Keep a few threads from coming off. Then wack the steering knuckle right near the ball joint with the ford wrench (aka big f**** hammer) It should pop loose.

Hit where labeled. Also make sure you are not supporting the weight of the front end under the LCA,or it will not pop apart, support the front with jackstands under the unibody rails.

Hit it down and make sure the nut is off.

Hit where the arrow is pointing, only one way to hit it  .Hit the direction of the arrow! DO NOT HIT DOWN,it will riun the knuckle,AND MAKE SURE THE NUT IS LOOSE BUT NOT COMPLETELY OFF(yes I'm yelling  ).

When I was doing mine I had to jack the knuckle up some to get the pressure of the UBJ and it came loose pretty easy after that. Try that

The theory behind hitting the knuckle with a BFH is the vibrations are what break the ball joints free, not the physical act of banging it apart.A real fast a slick way to release the UBJ's is to use a air hammer with a blunt tip on the same area, works real fast, about 1 second to release the UBJ.

Most of the older KJ's need some tension on the UBJ to be freed, the shocking of the metal from the hammer won't be as effective on a more rusted setup without some tension to help the release.

I used a small puller. That worked pretty good.

I also like using the puller but I dont always have one on hand.

DO NOT hit up on the A-arm!!! To not hit down on the knuckle! Both of those will damage the ball joint.

Hit in the spot that tjkj has the arrow pointing to. Hit it from the side. :)

edit:

Here is the puller that I like. Just gotta be sure you dont tear the boot.

Mine came apart with like 2 taps from a BFH. Shouldn't be that hard to seperate if you're hitting it in the right spot... :?
