Post subject:  Having trouble hunting down a noise...

The noise came from a rough night of off-roading (approximately 2 weeks ago). It only occurs while i'm driving, usually >15mph.

The noise sounded like there was a small rock or lots of dirt in the brakes pads (rubbing against the rotors, similar but much less aggressive than the sound of cutting a rotor) on both sides of the front (noise comes from both sides). So I took off both sets of pads but they were clean.

Then it was hinted to me that maybe all the mud caked in around the transfer case is making the noise. So after every day of me driving, I hose down the area and some dirt comes down and the noise goes away for a little bit (usually) but it comes back.

I'm starting to wonder if maybe it's my front suspension or something else? I'm planning on taking my front tires off today and checking to make sure all the bolts are tight (I havn't done this since I put the lift on >2 months ago) along with the bolts on the top of the strut tower inside the engine bay.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know, this noise is starting to drive me absolutely crazy...

It's not the backing plates hitting the rotors is it? Can you jack the front end up, spin the tires by hand and hear it?

I'll try it out when I get home and let you know... Thanks! I hadn't thought about trying that....

Did you end up finding out what the noise was? I'm interested as I've got a new noise after a good play in some mud (not as thick as your pic shows but it was a lot of mud).

Yeah it's the CV joint on the front driveshaft. I need to get that thing replaced asap. I oiled up the CV and the noise went away (for now) but the CV is in such bad shape that even in 2WD the thing just rattles when i'm driving down the road...

I have a similar noise coming from the front of my Sport as well. Seems to come and go though. Haven't had a chance to check things out yet though.

That sux, how did you find out it was the CV. What I'm rally asking is are you able to check it at home or do you need to have a pro look at it :?:

I did it at home by jacking up one side of the front end and turning the front wheel. To confirm I put my hand on the front driveshaft (you want to do this when the exhaust is cold, I burned my arm cause I wasn't paying attention) and turn it. There is probably about 1/2" to an 1" of play in the CV and I was able to replicate the god awful "tink"ing noise that I hear driving down the road. The CV FINALLY gets replaced under warranty on monday. After that's replaced, it's time to rebuild the rear and put an air locker back there
