Can I install my rear end 4:10 gears and run them without changing the front gear set as long as I don't engage 4WD? Just want to get the rear done before I move. I am going to be towing a car across the country with the KJ. When I get to Phoenix I will do the front. |

Yes you can, but I would pull out the front driveshaft in case someone else grabs the transfer case shifter |

Wheels spin at drastically different rates. Bad for pretty much the whole thing; tires, tranny, t-case, just wouldn't be good. |

when you change the rear to 4.10's, what do you have to change the front to for the ability to run in 4x4 ? |

You will just have to change ring and pinion in the front afterwards to regain 4x4. I test drove a tahoe once with 4.56 in the rear and 4.10 in the front. The cusomer complained that it was chirping and jerky in 4x4. I thought the world was gonna end when I locked it in on blacktop. I regeared his read to match the front and sent him on his way. |

so if you put 4.10's in the rear, you have to put 4.10's in the front as well, correct ? and doing that is $600 or so for both ? tjkj, does that sound right ? |

Probably about $600 per axle. The ring and pinion plus install kit is about 250 per axle and you will pay handsomely for a proper install. This is one of those things you don't want to attempt on your own unless you're ASE certified. |

Your looking at more about $600 per axle at least unless you do the labor, expect the front to be more expense due to the added labor of removeing the front diff and reinstalling it,about a 8 hour job at best(have to pretty much remove the whole front suspension also). While swapping the gears don't forget to get master install kits(about $80-$120 depending on axle) and have all the seals and bearings replaced. The D30A does not have a master install kit so the parts have to be purchased seperatly which is more $$$,and D30 install kit will not work if I remember correctly.

Is it really worth it? I mean you'll be changing from a 3.73 to a 4.10 ratio right? Will it make that much difference? |
