Post subject:  Rock-Trac/Atlas Swap

If I find a Rock-Trac or an Atlas II transfer case, will it be an easy swap with the current 242 that I have or are there some problems to run into with spline count and shaft length? I have the 545RFE transmission. Also, is one better than the other? I found them both online for about $2100 with the Atlas actually less expensive but I prefer to stay with Jeep components unless there is a huge advantage with the Atlas. I know of the 2-lo but I figure rear ARB lockers will take care of that.

Thanks!

The ATlas can be built to fit your output on the tranny. If you buy one from someone (prebuilt for a different application) it could cost around $200 to get the kit to change the input shaft to meet your current one. Atlass has good customer service, and have answered all of my questions about my unit and what I will need to make my unit work (built for a TH400). You would want to call in your order if you buy an atlas to ensure you get the right set up. You will also need to modify your tranny tunnel, and center console to accomodate the twin sticks.

The Rock Trac is a straight swap. Only difference I have been told is that the linkage is different, and 2wd is where 4Lo is on the liberty t-case shifter, so your handle will stick up when in 2wd.

YOu should check out he Klune setup that is in the for sale section. YOu might be able to swing a good deal on it. Ted is right, The NV241OR will end up with a backward transfer case shifter handle but I am not too concerned about that on mine.

Atlas all the way, I have abised mine (in the Bronco) and seen many of them OMG abused. All gear, no chain (though 242 has a good chain) Choice of ratios and bolt up install. MANY options for output yokes etc.

At some point I am sure ours will have an Atlas. Check with Kincade for a price....He got me mine.

Stack 3speed may also be worth checking out.

Good luck trying to fit one of those under a KJ,they are huge  !Plus they tip the scales at like 140+lbs,a AtlasII is 98lbs,and the RockTrac is also like 98lbs.

I'm getting the 4.3 AtlasII,after a hard long debate with myself on spending the extra $500 for it($200 for the TJ E/speedo sender,$200 extra for the cable shifters).

Wow, you guys are good. Thanks for the links. Decisions, decisions... I can't wait to check out everyone's rig next year at Moab if I can make it.

Dave

P.S. Does the Atlas have a nuetral? I've been towed before and was wondering if this would be a problem with the Atlas.

Yep, either or both axles can be put in nuetral. Atlas allows "front digs" front wheel drive when needed in tight spots....
On the Atlas one stick is for the front axle, the other is for the rear, so you can select what you want....but NOT one in high and one in low. That would be BAD!!
