I was pondering this and thought I would see what you guys think. Would a set of off-road coilovers work for the rear of the KJ's? I guess my major concern is whether or not the consolidation of shock and spring to a single mounting point would decrease the lateral stiffness of the suspension. Any thoughts ?

Would work but you would need to cut out your rear floor to make room to maintain any travel,or loose about half of the articulation the KJ already has,or do about 10+" of lift.

x2 I agree...yall need to understand that ANYTHING is possible!!! Just depends on what yall are willin to do to make it possible sometimes, especially since the KJ aint the most user friendly jeep to get mods for IMO

I do realize that it certainly is possible. I figured that if someone were to do it they would either wind up with some cantilever system or some big shock hoops coming up through the floor in the rear. I guess my main question is whether or not you guys think the axle would need some additional lateral bracing. I guess this could be easily tested by pulling your coils and shocks off with the rear on stands and trying to move the axle side-to-side. Guess I don't really know how stiff our setup is to be honest. Would be curious to find out.

shocks and springs have about .5% bearing on side to side motion of the KJ
the upper rear link ,some call it a bumerang, along with the lower control arms do the side to side checking
