| Post subject: | Rear MOPAR tow hook install |
Okay, so I bought a used tow hook off Ebay a while ago & I want to install it now. My question is, dose it install using nutzerts and bolts like the skidplates? My sevice manual is of no help. My hook is identical to what this guy is trying to sell: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jeep-Liberty-Rear-Tow-Hook_W0QQitemZ160180066310QQihZ006QQcategoryZ6763QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem |

no nutzerts, there are nuts welded to the inside of the frame for 2 of the bolts. You need a c-clip (i'm pretty sure that is what its called) for the other bolt. I believe it is for the bolt closest to the rear left corner. It is about $12 from the dealership. |

Thanks! Found them and re-tapped the rust out of them... 12mmX1.75 if anyone cares. Next question, I see on the driver's side where the c-clip would go, however on the passenger side there are the same two threaded holes, but no place for the c-clip. So, is the c-clip necessary on the drivers side? |

I dont use the C-clip on the drivers side, but I'd recommend it. If I remember, theres 4 bolts including the single c-clip. |

Next question, I see on the driver's side where the c-clip would go, however on the passenger side there are the same two threaded holes, but no place for the c-clip. So, is the c-clip necessary on the drivers side? KJs never came with a tow hook on the passengers side. The threaded holes are there for a hitch. On the drivers side, the hitch and tow hook utilize the same holes, hence the reason you can't have both. I guess you could only use 2 bolts, but depending on how hard you're going to have to pull on it, you may run the risk of bending/breaking bolts or the bracket. Might as well spend the 10 bucks for the c-clip and do it right. |

I was thinking that since, as you said, I can't have a hook & a hitch, Jeep might have guessed People may consider having two hooks, or placing the single hook on either side... Unfortunately, most car makers don't think as I'd like them to! I ordered the clip last night, $7.88. FWIW, There are 4 holes in the hooks mounting bracket, but only one place for a c-clip. So it is held in place by only 3 bolts. |

It is indeed 12mmX1.75. Thankfully, I didn't cause any cross threading or other damage I edited my previous post to prevent anyone from making that mistake based on my misstatement. |

My local Westlake Ace hardware has the threaded nut clip for under $2, I paid $5 at the dealership. |
