If Im not mistaked the wheel bearing is inside the hub assembly so to check if its bad you can jack up the wheel and try to shimmy the wheel top and bottom to see if there is any play. the only thing that could go bad in the hub is the wheel bearing itself i think. I still haven't got mine figured out either. |

when hub wheel bearing assemblies go bad they are not always loose and can still be noisey/bad. another way to tell is to drive down the road and and kind of swerve slowly to the left and right. usually the noise will get worse or get quiet depending on which way you are turning. |

So, if I swerve to the right and the noise stops or is somewhat reduced which bearing would be bad? I would rather just change one rather than pay $360 x 2 for the assembly. 06 Liberty CRD |

You can get them for a lot cheaper than 360 each and they are pretty easy to fix your self, the only thing special that is needed is the large axle hub nut socket. I believed I paid about 150 for my passenger side hub with abs. And I had similar noise. But I did not do the swerve test. Some one correct me if I am wrong, but if you go to the right and it stops I would say it is the right that is bad because you would be putting more weight onto the left when you swerve and unloading the right side. |

Generally, a bad hub causes a roaring noise that goes away when you turn one direction or the other, not a banging. I'd look at other things, like your CV joint, ball joints, etc. |

Hmm...roaring noise that goes away when you turn to the right. That's me! It's a gentle roar, but it's present if I go straight or left at highway speeds. When I turn the wheel slightly right, it goes away. Is there a good way to tell which hub assembly is the problem? I'd guess it's the right side, since it seemed much louder from the passenger seat than from the driver's seat. Also, is the CRD hub assembly the same part number as the gasser hub assembly? Thanks, Jon |

Buy Timken assemblies cheaper then Mopar and better quality and yes they are the same as the gasser. Also the left can be used on the right and vise versa just have to be careful on how you route the ABS sensor cable. That should save you some money all the way around. |

Just bought a $40 chinese bearing'ed Hub Assembly for my Fiancee's Ford Ranger. I was hoping to see how many miles it lasted before I needed to replace another hub assembly. If the $40 part would last more than 1/6th the miles of the $240 Timken hub assembly it would be well worth it, it's not that hard to replace...maybe 20 minutes of work. Oh well, anyone have a good source of Timken hub assemblies and the part number? Thanks, Jon |

http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/Jeep/Liberty/Timken/Wheel_Hub/2005/Limited/4_Cyl_2-dot-8L/TMHA599455R.html?loc=Front%2C+Passenger+Side Quick search turned this up I am currently running two passenger sides which as you can see saves you some cash. Also double check if you have abs a lot of people do but a few lucky ones don't. |

Sorry, yeah, lowest Timken I've found is RockAuto.com. $143. I just wondered if there were any other sources anyone had found yet. Thanks, Jon |

I have the same thing, a roar when going straight or to the left. But mine sounds to be in the rear though. Should I still check the front hubs as well? Cars and Trucks always have strange accoustics so I probably will lift up everything while im at it anyways though. |

Check both the front the stethoscope to listen to the bearings hear grinding with the rotor off of course it is bad. |
