Yesterday a group of us went out to look for petrified wood south of Martinez Lake on the Colorado River. The rigs were a lifted '06 Rubicon Unlimited running 33 inch MT/R's, an FJ with BFG KO's but no lift and my KJ. I was skeptical about how well the stock tires would work but they did the job. I must say I was quite impressed with the OME suspension.
This was my first off-road trip with any real challenge since installing the lift. Between the lift and the Jeep's traction control, the trail was a breeze. The worst obstacle of the day was a low rock wall about three feet high, nearly vertical and at the top of a hill with a slight left hand turn 3/4 of the way up the hill. I scraped a skid plate, very lightly, going up and over. On the way back I didn't scrape at all. The FJ didn't fair as well. Even with his lockers, he had to scrape and spin tires to get over it. The FJ seriously lacked ground clearance with the brush guard and front skid the owner had added. I honestly think the KJ had slightly better clearance, stock.
I think the biggest improvement, over stock, was not having the "follow-up bounce" after a tire clears an obstacle that I had with the stock suspension. All day long the KJ just conformed to the terrain and crawled over everything.
I've owned and driven LOTS of different 4x4's over the years but the KJ is definitely the most comfortable off-roader I have experienced.
The Light/Medium OME combo doesn't get a lot of attention here but, I must say I am impressed with the performance. I kept wondering if I should have gone with the Medium springs up front. Now, I'm very happy with my choice.
