:x :x :x
I was trying to pull up a rich pine stump today and hooked the winch to it. The line got tight and then the cable just snapped about ten feet from where the cable hooks up to the winch. This is only the second time I have used the winch. It is a 9500 lb mile marker winch with a 3/8 inch cable.

I recall noticing a shard of wire sticking out at about the same place it broke. I guess I just got a bad cable.

Steel Cable should be unavailable. That Old School Crap will damage your vehicle, take off an extremity or maybe end your life............... It also conducts electricity.. http://forums.officer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26786

Post subject:  winch line

I was in Tellico at night once with two flat tires and had a winch cable snap while trying to get unstuck. I jumped off the road into a tree as I heard the cable go by. All synthetic after that. I got hit by a synthetic line that snapped once. Just looked down and tied it back together. Best money you can spend.

Synthetic and a snatch block any time you can

Snatch block almost anytime. Yes it does slow things down on your recovery, but it doubles the pulling power of your winch. very handy if you are on a incline. Also it allows you to pull more cable out utilzing the optimum pulling power of your winch.

Did you pre stretch the cable? As in unspool it and re wrap it with some tension on it?
If you don't do that, you end up having the cable bite down on itself on the drum, causing friction then breakage. It can also cause your cable to bird cage. Not good times.

Seth, Is that true with synthetic also or just the wire cable?

Also, Seth,

I just read an email from Marlin Gehman where he mentioned that Winches by ARB are coming soon.

I am in the market for a winch to go in your (arb's) bumper.

can you disclose any details? who makes it, what capacities, street prices? I can only assume that they will be designed to work with the arb equipment.

Sorry for the Hyjack.

DETAILS, Please

Who's Marlin Gehman? No comment on the winches.
Line doesn't have quite the same problem as wire, but you still need to wrap it once under a little strain to keep it on the spool cleanly.
Synthetic doesn't like friction at all... it'll melt if the rope bites down on itself, but it won't break it like wire does. Also, if it does part, most good synthetic breaks at 7% stretch, so there is no stored energy in the line when it goes. That's why it's safer. It won't cut your legs off like nylon or cables do.

may be a dumb question be here goes.... Is there any problem running synthetic line in really cold weather? It doesn't get brittle or anything at sub-zero does it?

Author:  WoodysKJ [ Tue Dec 11, 2007 8:56 am ]
Post subject:

Thtas not a dumb question at all. I would imagine that if it is cold enough to snap or make a synth. cable brittle, you need to be asking yourself "Why the hell am I out here?"

lol :) hey who's gonna stop wheelin' and havin fun just cuz it's cold outside?

Author:  WoodysKJ [ Tue Dec 11, 2007 10:17 am ]
Post subject:

That's not just cold...

any temp cold enough to make synthetic winch cable brittle would most definately freeze the ball os of my brass monkey.

If you are stuck in temps that cold you have MUCH bigger problems. Conserve your energy, you are going to need it.

Better yet curl up in a ball, put your head between your knees and kiss your arse good bye. see you in the spring thaw.
