Post subject:  Power steering pump issues

Has anyone else had power steering pump issues? Mine is making the famous ford groan. I checked the fluid levels and hoses and everything checks out ok. It gets worse when going downhill. It only has 58k on it. :(

Good thing about PS pumps, they are cheap and fairly easy to change out.

You ever change the fluid in it?

Mine makes a fair bit of noise on a cold startup (-15c and below), but doesn't complain when it's above 0c. Haven't had any other problems with it yet. Glad to hear that they are cheap and easy to replace.

That stinks... It seems to be getting worse by the day. and I have a 1800 mile road trip next week.

About how much did it cost to replace?

i think if you look at posts from December 2006 and then look at posts from December 2005 and so on, you will see this same issue come up at the beginning of each winter. I posted about it last winter once. My pump whines and groans when it's cold, but shuts up once the engine temp rises. It doesnt make any noise at all when its warmer outside to begin with. I checked fluid levels and all that nonsense too... no problems.

Well the stealership told me it was a common problem, pump for me was only 100bucks and pretty easy to replace. Only whined when it was cold. Just bothered me. Never failed.

They pretty much all whine at start up when it's cold. Mine started to whine all the time when it was cold so I bought a used pump off ebay, ready to replace it. Then I got lazy so instead I siphoned some fluid out and I topped it off with some ATF4. It shut up and doesnt moan at start anymore up either. If you want a used pump, I got one still packed from ebay for $30 + shipping.

I'd throw some ATF4 in it first though.

I used an old turkey baster, pumped it out three times and replace it with SYN power steering fluid.

Start it up and turn the wheel to lock each way after you add the fluid then suck it back out again. I ended up getting around 3/4 of a quart out doing it like that.

Mine whined every winter, it started to do it earlier this month, I paid no attention to it and now the noise is gone :?:
I checked the fluid and its fine. Hope it doesn’t die on me.

Post subject:  I have not heard any noise

But I was experinceing a little dificulty in steering and so I added Amsoil ATF just reasently felt a little more resitance so it' time for further investigation. But Amsoil will go in if the box needs rebuilding :P :D
