Hi
Does anyone have tried to install these halogen bulbs??

Hella 9007XE-100CB (80w/100w)

I installed those 2 years ago in another KJ and installed a relays and a fuses circuit but the light socket was almost melted...

Any help?

Thanks

I had put some 80/100w bulbs in an '89 sprint some time ago. It worked for about a year, then I started having problems. The tail lights went out then the low beams went out shortly after. Although the housing was fine, the 15 AMP fuse that was supposed to prevent anything from happening, didn't pop. Unfortunately the fuse panel melted and started causing all sorts of little problems.

I had just bought a samurai at the time and sold the sprint to a friend of mine. He was eventually able to track the problem to the fuse box and once replaced, everything started working again. Kinda makes me leery of putting the 65w bulbs in my fogs. I really don't want to deal with chasing electrical problems in a perfectly function vehicle.

Well, actually I didn't have any electrical problem, that's why I installed a relays and extra fuses circuit, BUT just the light socket was melted not the fuse panel

It seems that the socket does not support such kind of heating due the current , I dont know...

Anyway thanks for sharing your experience, I will take this in account as a reference for future cases

I know troy is using 100w fog lights on the (assumingly) stock wiring. I'm sure he'd report problems if he had any...

I'm Troy.

Yes I'm running 100w 9005's in my fogs,5 years and no problems. For about 3 years I ran 80w/100w headlamp bulbs,no problems, just went to silverrstars after one lamp burnt out and they didn't carry them at the closest parts store(had to change ASAP since it was night and I was on a 3000 mile trip). The silverstars where just as bright but didn't have the "blue" effect as my old bulbs did.Factory wiring all around.

Just make sure all grounds are good, that's the biggest problems with melting fuse blocks and such.

hooooo ok Troy, sorry I didn't know was you, je je, I read a lot of your post, very nice KJ you have!!!!

So, there shouldn't be any problem if I replace my normal headlamp bulbs with a Hella 80/100W?
It suppose all brands are the same, rigth?? I mean, the electrical characterstics...

My KJ is an 05 LTD, I don't know if there are any difference as this a Non Us-Canada version (I mean Km instead Miles), as far as I know there are no major changes as the cluster and some other we do not have here in Mexico (dayligth lamps, rear fog lamp, etc), but the voltage and current wiring specs should be the same.

I also don't know if there are any change on the wiring or fuses between '02 and '05 models, the problem I had was on my previous '04, as I told, the headlamp socket was almost melted, too much current? I don't know....

Thanks for your comments!!!! I will try again

I put the PIAA's in the first 2 weeks and last month got the 9005's for the fogs I'm very very very pleased with how well this combo works together. No pun intended but it is a night and day difference. Yeah the Silver Stars need some slight trimming to fit but well worth the work.

Be careful about putting higher wattage bulbs in there. Thats a quick way to make an electrical fire is a fuse doesnt pop in time.

I had a fuse melt after putting 65watt fogs in place of the stock 45watt bulbs. Fuse never did blow, just melted. :?
