Who has the best price for a gas tank skid? Edit - I'd prefer after market (kilby's, etc). |

Best price? Not sure. But I recommend you either go to All-J Products or Kilby directly for the "best quality" skid available. |

I had actually contact Kilby, but they are currently out of stock. Their list price is $245 (or something close). I was wondering and/or hoping there may be some dealers that are running specials, etc. |

Not to knock the super-gas-tank-skids (they do look really sturdy), but has there ever been a case of the stock gas tank skid not being enough? I mean, hitting a rock so hard that it dented the skid plate *and* busted the tank in one hit? I'm sure lots of skids get dented, but you take em off and hammer em back out again. I've never heard of a skid plate actually breaking, especially not failing in such a way as to also break the tank at the same time. I'd expect one hit to damage the skid plate, and if you didn't bang it back out, the next hit would break the tank (by hit, I mean like, HUGE hit, probably not one after another, but more like from one wheeling trip to the next). Of course now that I say that, I should ask - has anybody actually busted a skid plate? (photos would be awesome) |

"I'm sure lots of skids get dented, but you take em off and hammer em back out again. That would be way more effort than the price differnce is worth (in my opinion). "I had actually contact Kilby, but they are currently out of stock. " You'll probably have to wait a while to get one of these from Kilby then. Get what you think you need.... With a low clearance 4x4 like the KJ, armor is your best mod. Good luck |

There are some pictures and commentary from TJ guys (I have one as well) where the guy hit a rock just right and punctured his tank. It mght be rare, but if I'm going to shell out some bucks, then why not pay more and get a substantially better skid? |

But wouldn't any skid have to have an opening in it somewhere? You wouldn't want to go through a stream or something and get water in it without having some way for it to drain. Otherwise, your looking at a major rust problem. |

Oh, I definitely don't doubt it one bit. As skid plates go, it's the best. But I'm just saying that the Mopar fuel tank skid can be had for around $100 (about half the cost of the others). If somebody is on a tighter budget, I would think that the mopar skid provides *plenty* of protection for the average wheeler, if not more than enough. If somebody is going out and buying a lift, tires, full skids and lockers anyway, and budget isn't a problem, then sure, go for the gold. On the other hand, spending $250 on the fuel tank skid is stopping them from buying another skid, rail, etc, I say go Mopar. It's better to have everything covered, even if it's just the factory skids. |

Got my rusty and it has taken some pretty hard hits, it is tuff. Gotta give props to it. Read somewhere someone bent the mopar skid which cause the fuel tank to be push up and broke a bracket? Anyway, for most trails mopar is fine i'm sure, but one thing to keep in mind the KJ hangs low there and if you go off some ledges you gotta be carefull. If you got a mopar already then keep it, if you have none buy something aftermarket. I got my used for same price as a mopar.... good luck. |

Another advantage of the Mopar one is that it is much lighter than the aftermarket ones. Less weight=less sag. If you wheel hard in rocks often then go for the strongest you can find, not the cheapest aftermarket one. Besides they are all within $75(thats only one night out with the misses) of each other. |
