| Post subject: | Mopar Skid plates??? |
I got new mopar skids. I'm installing them and the engine skid has two threaded holes in the front axle crossmember for the skid to bolt to, but it does not have threaded holes in the engine/transmission crossmember. The holes do no line up in the back and are not even small enough for the bolt to be threaded into. Did i possibly get the wrong skids? maybe I got 05-07? ( mines an 03 Limited) any idea why neither the engine skid nor transmission skid is working out for me? |

drill new holes through the corss members and bolt the skids in place. Ditto on the nutzerts sucking - I had the nutserts on the tranny skid pop out when I came down on something. All my skids (except the gas and the front of the engine) are held on with bolts. |

i thought about returning them, but shipping would be a pain. also thought about going to the stealership and seeing if they would trade me 05-07's for 02-04's. however if I did just make it work. where could i find some beefy self tapping bolts? already tryed ace, lowes, and home depot. |

Ditto on the carriage bolts. nutzerts require a special tool, not worth it for the cross members since you can get to the nut easily on top of the cross member. |

Unfortunately, MOPAR no longer sells skid plates for 2002-2004 |

Just drill. Make sure nothing is above the crossmemeber first. They stopped making the more beefy skid and now make a thinner plate for the engine. |

The front skid for my 07 was listed, at the time of purchase of the KJ, as a re-designed part and under a new part number (and back ordered for ever). I tracked down an old front skid in a stealership in Minn. under thevold part number, bought it got it and it went right on with supplied nuts in factory tapped holes. shared the rear holes with the tranny skid that was installed at dealership all as additional parts as an item in the sales agreement. For the 02-07, I was told and under the impression, with the exception of the CRD's, that all of the skids were the same and nothing changed under the KJ for the mounting. Some models had the nutzerts already installed some didn't but holes in frame members were there. I KNOW that the front skid i put on my 07 is identical to the one on my wifes 02 limited and it came stock. The mounting holes on her 02 for the other two skids are the same as on my 07. no worries about the gas tanks skid. But all 3 for the front, tranny and transfercase are the same for my 07 and her 02, at leats the mounting holes are the same. Mine is the only one that is fully armored. I would investigate with local dealer before sending back. But I would also be very careful about maiking new holes in structural members. Anychance they are for a KK and not a KJ? |

well after further investigation i found that the website i ordered from had (05-07) next to the engine skid. Woody, I think you may have gotten lucky on mounting the same skid on your wives 02 and your 07. here is why i say that http://site.justforjeeps.com/guide/82209026.pdf |

What special tool? A bolt and a nut will do the job for you no problem. Take a threaded bolt and screw a nut onto it until it's about half-way down. Then screw on the rivet on top of it. Now position the rivet into the hole and hold the bolt while adjusting the nut upwards until the rivet reaches its holding strenght. No special tool needed for that install. Did this with a friend a couple of weeks ago, bolt + nut tool works perfectly although a bit more work is required than using a specialized tool. On topic: I just installed some ASFIR armor on my 2003 KJ CRD and all there was to do was to cut a bit into the sides of the transmission and transfer case skid to make room for the transmission crossmember. I got some pictures for you here: http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/sho ... hp?t=73374 Go to the bottom post for the best pictures! |

Woody, I think you may have gotten lucky on mounting the same skid on your wives 02 and your 07. here is why i say that http://site.justforjeeps.com/guide/82209026.pdf When I purchased the KJ (07) I asked for the entire skid plate offroad package and they said Okay. As we investigated the skids they ordered all except the FRONT plate, What I call the Engine Skid Plate and the one in the PDF you attached. EXACTLY the same as the one on both My 07 and the wifes 02. When all BUT that skid plate arrived at the stealership they told me that that part was no longer available. They said that it was under re-design because of the ball joints. I said WHAT are you talking about? They said that the new Part number is... and that it is back ordered till september (this was in June). I waited and in late Sept. I checked and they sasid not till december. so I said I will find one. Searched like a mad man and found that OLD design and part number in Minn. Got i9t and installed it in less than 10 minutes then noticed that it was Identical to the misses 02 front skid. Still have never heard a word about the one that is STILL n order through my stealership. (I left it on order out of curiousity) So I am not sure what I got or how lucky I am I just know it fit, it's ther and it works. For once something does. I have the same instruction sheet sitting right here next to me so the parts are the same. I just know I would not like to drill new holes in the structural memebers of my KJ. If it were me I would research it, return it or drill new holes in the skid plate to match existing holes on the car, if they will, before drilling the car. |

Good luck, I think they discontinued all the '02-'07 OEM skids when the KK came out, they may only be selling what s left in stock since none of them where ever standard except for the front skid for '02 4wd KJ's only(which was didcontinued long ago).I know my OEM front skid(that came standard on KJ's in '02) was almost twice as thick as the newer front skids, hung down to low though so got the SkidRow skids.

Never seen a build up of any 4WD that you never had to drill a hole in them, thats half the fun! They dont cry for too long, trust me Tom |
