front tow hooks ?

Any advise on Front tow hooks, other than the $ 100 Mopar ones ?? :?:

Mopar towhooks, aftermarket bumper, or used front reciever hitch.

JCWhitney.
$12 and about 15 minutes time will have a pair of 10k lb. hooks installed.
Never had a problem with them on my 03.

these mount on the same holes as the Mopars? I like the looks of the chrome ones for my 05 limited.

yes, they use the same mounting holes. Although they don't have the same base as the Mopar hooks, they will work.

And yes, I'm sure the price has gone up a bit since i bought mine 2 years ago.

Everyone asks for pix when I mention the JCW hooks.
I guess I'll have to get my lazy butt out of the drivers seat and snap a couple for you guys.

Just got my MOPAR hooks on this morning. Got them from the dealership - so I got ripped. Cut the plastic bumper things away with a fine tooth jewelers hack saw and smoothed it out with some fine sandpaper. Looks okay I guess. No torque wrench though, so I just cranked down till the bolts seemed tight enough. Would that be a bad thing??

I was under the impression that "standard" tow hooks like the ones from JC Whitney wouldn't work with 05-07 KJs, due to the unthreaded mounting holes. So the Mopar hooks come with their mounts and cool "M"-shaped bolts. So unless you have the time, talent, and inclination to do some fabbing, the $100 or so for the Mopar hooks is well worth their price to be able to just bolt them on. 04 and earlier KJs mount their tow hooks differently.

Oldgus, I'd try to borrow a torque wrench from someone. If I remember right, the hooks call for 45 ft-lbs, and speaking for myself and my own skinny arms, I can't get more than 20 ft-lbs with an ordinary ratchet.

Didn't I just read a post somewhere where the JCW tow hooks were literally pulled right out of the front of the KJ in a tow/stuck situation?? would this have happened with the Mopar hooks like the OP said it would?? I need to find the link...but what do you all think??

This is why you use a 3-hole mount that spreads the weight and not a 2-hole mount.

Note it is KJKev who was espousing the use of the JCW ones who just ripped them out of his bumper yesterday. :roll:

I recommend buying the Mopar ones. When I get my Landy hitch installed, I'll be selling mine. :wink:

I am currently waiting on the JCW hooks, but have taken the advise of some others and have started fabbing the custom ones made out of the 1 1/4" reciever hitches with the D rings. It will be a while before they are finished though, have to track down a drill press....

Go with the Mopar hooks and save your self some headaches
I have them on the TJ and the KJ
on our trip we just took to the Smokies I pulled a "15 passenger van" one of those huge 1 ton vans that the church groups use
out of the mud and I pulled it with 1 of the 2 front hooks and at a good angle
keep in mind that I spun the MTR's on pavement trying to move this thing but the hook did not break or pull out

There is a right and a wrong way to pull out a stuck any thing
and each situation is different
I have pulled a forklift ,8K #, that was "framed out" with the TJ ,LOADS of jerking and the hooks held fine
