| Post subject: | Fingerprint scanner for ignition... |
I was watching American Chopper today and they were making an Intel bike with a fingerprint scanner for a starter. Dont know if its a rerun or not. Either way...is it possible for a Jeep? I wouldnt want to disable the key ignition as others may need to use the vehicle as well but an alternate option to have a fingerprint scanner to start the vehicle would be cool. Probably not practical...but cool. Anybody know? |

i know of a few work places where you have to clock in with your fingerprint. But i belive some of your higher end auto makers already use the technology in their cars.no keys needed |

Nissan already has pushbutton start when a remote is in the proper vicinity of the vehicle. Probably buy that relay/control, modify it to not need the remote, and use a fingerprint scanner from a laptop to send the ignition sequence when the correct fingerprint is placed on it. Better yet, buy a biometric safe and modify that scanner, because you can program up to 5 fingerprints in some of those safes, and it most likely has all removable circuitry. |

so what are you going to do with the steering wheel lock or will it be put the key in turn it on but start it by finger print controls?? Sounds like a bunch of work for nothing other than to impress people who dont really need to be impressed anyways |

Naw...the key lock would stay. And be functional. Im just saying you could use the fingerprint scanner to send the same signal that the keylock does to start the engine. |

When this becomes the norm are we going to see "car-jackers" walking around with a keychain filled with peoples cutoff index fingers? LOL...I imagine the thief flipping through the fingers on the keyring like we all do with our keys looking for the right one...."Now which dang finger starts this ride again? I gotta get it to the chop shop!" ok, ok...that was baaaad....I need a cup of coffee to straighten out the brain. |

Finger print pad would make a nice security feature, especially if it was in a nice out-of-the-way place. Definitely have to use one that could program numerous people's prints. And have a "valet" function that would disable it for the next start or something. Cool security idea. |

I think the push button start is a cool feature but I won’t go out of my way to alter the way my Liberty starts. |

Fingerprint can be easily copied, even with a personal flatbed scanner which you can get for $50, unless you gonna put a SENTRY chip up your..... nose |

The new Rolls Royce (at over $850,000.00) has biometrics in its system as well as voice activated controls and a $850.00 umbrella stored in its front fenders that are only accessable when opening the suicide doors. Guess if you can afford a 850.00 umbrella then you can afford to park your Rolls wher it won't get stollen with yout dead cut off finger. |

I think a retinal scanner would be be the way to go. You sit down in the driver seat and the car automatically scans your eyes, validates your identity, and starts-up. You could have different "driver profiles" that could automatically adjust things like seat position, mirrors, stearing wheel, and maybe even adjust the engine management to meet your driving style. Plus if you were say a parent of a teenage driver, you could have control over when your kid drives off with the car! The possibilities could go on for a while. Ok ok, enough dreaming... when it comes down to it, i'm fine just turning the key |

this is not a good idea guys. That is just what the government wants you to do. I see you all will be the first ones getting tracking devices inserted under your skin. |

Haha, but a computer printer doesn't have the same resolution required that the biometric scanner reads. It also reads temperature and moisture. If you use a wet finger, no start. If you have an object with less than normal skin moisture, no start. Tough to duplicate. And trust me, if someone finally figures out how to duplicate your biometric scanner, they would have been able to steal your KJ a long long time ago. |

Um, Mythbusters already proved that you can duplicate a persons fingerprint for a scanner lock. They did a whole episode on how to beat different security measures. They also showed how to beat a motion sensor. If I recall, their duplicate fingerprint worked on the first or second try too. It was pretty easy. |

They can already track you with your "cell"-phone. |

Bah, this would make my remote start useless. That's a luxury I've come to love too much to give up. I got remote start on my last vehicle on a whim, and I've come to realize I'll never be without it again, unless I move to somewhere with a year round perfect climate. Someone wants to steal her, she's insured. |
