Post subject:  TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR LIGHT

Hey everyone,
I have an 05 Renegade which I thought I was sure doesnt come with the tire pressure sensors.???? Correct me on this one please... For the last week that stupid dash loght has been coming on and stayin on for awhile then going off. I havent felt like going the whole way to the dealer...Anyone have that issue... I think I am gonna disconnect the battery to see if that will reset it without having to go to the dealer

Thanks Danielle

The TPMS comes standard on the '05 Renegade with or w/o the EVIC. Check all your tires for any low pressure and also check for any variances in several pounds between any tires, even the spare. A few lbs difference will set off the TPMS warning light too.

There are two different tire pressure systems in '05 KJs. There's the fancy one that displays actual pressure on an EVIC and uses sensors mounted in each tire, and there's the standard in all '05 KJs, government mandated system you have with just the warning light. The warning light system doesn't actually have the slightest clue what the pressure in the tires is; it actually just looks for differences in wheel speed indicating different rolling diameters (usually caused by lower pressure in one or more tires.)

it was my understanding that the tire pressure monitoring system in the '05 actually does monitor pressure... even in the spare... apparently using specialized valve stems to monitor pressure...

the option is the tire pressure monitoring display which shows the actual pressures in each tire in the EVIC...

i don't have my user manual handy right this minute, but i'm sure i recall it saying that the system monitors pressures, including the spare (how can it monitor the spare? it's not rotating) regardless of whether or not you have the EVIC display option...

anyway... mine doesn't have the optional pressure display function, but it definately has some heavy duty looking valve stems in each wheel so i'm sure that's how it works...

here's the next big question... can you transfer the valve stems to aftermarket wheels? hmmm... :)

edit: i just looked in my owner's manual and it indeed says that the base system has wireless sensors in each wheel's valve stem that signal a low pressure situation... the premium system includes the ablility to display the pressures on the EVIC... however, it's confusing as to whether or not the spare will trip the indicator light... it does say that a sensor is included in the spare if you hva a full size matching spare (don't they all?)... but the system apparently knows about the pressures in the four mounted wheels, but will still work properly if you follow a 5 tire rotaion schedule.. whew.. lotta stuff going on there.. wish i had a soft copy of my owner's manual.. would be easier to cut and paste

Yeah, there's definitely some magic going on there. How on earth can it wirelessly know which tire is the spare? It does...

Yeah I agree, I looked into this as well when I first saw the light on the dash come on. The "Tire Pressure Monitoring" system option is actually just the display, the actual monitoring is done all the time. Without the TPM option, when I have a tire issue I see "TIRE PRESSURE LOW" or "SPARE PRESSURE LOW" on the evic, and the little orange tire indicator on the dash.

My dash warning light came on and the monitor said 'Spare Pressure Low'. When I checked the spare's pressure, it said '32 lbs'. I put three lbs. in it and the light went out. If you ignore it the light will go out and return each time you start the engine. Going to be fun when I air down for the trail.

Hmm, I stand corrected. Just before the '05s actually came out DC's media site described the tire pressure system as I did above. I guess they changed it last minute.

How does it know which tire is the spare you ask? Each sensor has a unique ID code assigned. At stand stll the sensors send out a signal once an hour with its ID and the pressure. When rotating at about 20mph or higher they sesnd a signal once a minute. The computer keeps track of which tires send out signals and how often.

Here's the description for the WK; the '05 KJ is pretty much the same:

Two BIG warnings though. Never use Fix-a-Flat or any other tire sealant if you have tire pressure sensors, it will ruin them and they are about $50 each. Also, I highly advise against lowering the pressure more than a few pounds while offroading, as several members have broken their sensors when the tire compresses traveling over rocks and othe obsticals.
