Post subject:  4x4 "Binding" while backing up and wheels cut hard

My wife had an incident today where her Lib apparently "locked up" on her while backing out of a parking spot..

She had it in (4) wheel High at the time. She had the steering wheel turned at FULL lock left and started to back out of the spot. She claimed the Lib would NOT move at all in reverse.

She then pulled back FORWARD, placed it back in (2) wheel drive and the Lib moved just fine after that.

After she got home, I tested the (4) wheel function myself and could not find anything wrong at all. I tried duplicating what she did and it worked fine.

I've heard that "real" 4WD systems do sometimes "BIND" up when turning at full lock (from a stop), but never experienced it myself.

Anyone experience this type of "Binding up" before ?

mine sometimes is hard to back up at full lock in 4 wheel drive. im not to sure why that is but i think its prety normal. u have to give it a little gas thats all, she probably just freaked out cause she is not use to it and hadnt experienced it before. it would seem that it wouldnt turn but it will.

If it was locked in 4 wheel drive and she had the wheels cut all the way of course it is going to bind up, :? all the wheels are trying to turn at the same speed/ rotation so it bound up for sure, tell her you just cant do that unless of course its on solid ice, lots of snow etc where you can get some slippage of the tires

OKay you should NOT have you KJ or any other 4wd vehicle in four wheel drive on pavement. (especially when turning into/out of a parking spot. When you are engaged in 4wd the front an rear wheels are moving at the same speeds due to being locked in the transfer case. So when you steer the binding occurs and can seriously damage you jeep or any 4wd vehicle for that matter.

** I knew someone(tom) would beat me to it.(I must type slower)

If you have Full Time 4-wheel and that's the mode you were in and the "binding" still happened you have an issue. However, if it was in 4H (part time 4-wheel drive) it will always do that when you're on pavement - and it's very bad. What they said above is correct.

Not on dry pavement. If there was snow on the ground then 4HI would be fine, but yes the turning radius does increase in 4HI due to the issues mentioned above. Just let her know that if she does need to make a sharp turn while in 4HI she may need to do it in two parts to avoid this in the future.

OT but I had to go drive 35 miles the one time to go pick up my grandmother cause she said her car wouldn't start. When I get there the darn car was in drive. Of course it wouldn't start!! Placed it in park and it fired right up. Boy was she embarrassed! Same thing as a vehicle not ovin with the hand brake still on.

Had the same thing happen to my girlfriend last year. She just got her used Suzuki a few months back and she has forgotten to put it in Park many times, but one day she forgot to check and couldn't start it. After a few minutes she found out it was in Drive and got it started right away. Now to the funny part.

Last week on her job she was hurried out to the parking lot by a colleague because she again hadn't put her car in Park and also forgot to tighten the handbrake. She was greeted by two men who were holding her car, preventing it from hitting other parked cars in the lot. She was a little embarrased and when she told me the story she started it by saying "my parking brake doesn't work properly, this day at work...".

Needless to say when I got into the car I pulled the handbrake "normally" and could move the car by pushing it around. I drew the handbrake properly and the car was properly parked. :D

You should never use 4HI on hard surfaces. If its done alot, things will break sooner or later.

This is the main reason they do not have 4HI on the KK's. People dont know how to use the 4wd and blame it on the Jeep when it breaks.

-4Full time is meant to be used on ALL surfaces at ALL times if desired.

-4Hi is meant to use in mud, loose gravels, roads that are TOTALLY covered in snow or ice, etc.

-4low is the same as 4hi but its geared lower for situations that require high torque.

I'm assuming you've gotten your answer by now (assuming you don't have a full-time transfer case).

Please teach your wife the difference between a full-time and part-time transfer case, so she can safely use the jeep in any condition.

HA HA
she is not alone
My TJ binds all the time on dry pavement
forward or reverse
Then again it has a Detroit locker so that could be the problem
I better do something about it before some thing breaks
